Why would you buy one of those pretty things and stick it in a fire to heat water when there are plenty of good WWll stainless steel canteens around for half the price?
And while you are at it you should check out the current G.I. issue molle canteen /utility pouches. They work great with the Nalgene G.I. style canteens or as a general purpose pouch.
They are a little roomier than the old style and are adjustable for fit. They have a draw string top and flap when used as a pouch or tuck the flap inside and use the Y strap to hold the canteen. (check out some of the auctions on the bay for pictures but make sure you are looking at the G.I. versions)
The two pockets on the sides are big enough to hold a altoid tin and if you loosen up on the Y strap there is room for a fire kit, emergency blanket or triox bars. under the canteen.
The only thing it doesn't have that the older style had is the lining that you could wet that would keep your water cool by evaporation.
I bought one of the stainless G.I. canteens after reading all the posts about cooking in your stainless bottles but with the G.I. canteen cup and stove Im not sure why I would need to, so I usually carry the nalgene canteens which hold a couple more ounces than the metal.
