Is there a stainless that I can heat treat like my 1080? I would like to just heat it up non magnetic. Quench it in cornola oil and bake 2 cycles. Any stainless that easy?? Thanks guys.

nope... not a single one. It's all that chrome and moly in the recipe that makes it like a slow ramp up to temp, fairly long soak time, and most if not all martinsitic stainless is air or plate quench only. Oil would be really to fast and could induce stresses that tempering would not be able to relax. find ya ceramics kiln for cheap, you can ususally pick them up at garage sales for a benjamin or less.

It's even easier, you just send it out and have someone else do it. It's cheap and it comes out right ever time!

Oil quench is fine for some of these steels if you are so inclined - but you have to soak at specific temp for specific time - and no, it's not just non-magnetic.

Bob Loveless cooked his first knife in the oven on board a ship and it turned out fine. Do ya feel lucky? Cause luck is all ya got going.

Get the stainless and air quench steels done professionally. It's pretty cheap.

Rob!

most all the SS i have worked with has a hold at temp of 1900 or higher

and soak times of 20 min
many are better if cryoed

so till you get a little more gear (you always need more tools) just send it out for heat treat
