got some 1/4'' 304 stainless, and i was wandering if it's good for anything ?? i have 2 plates of it, approx. 14''x12''. If not i may just use it for jigs and misc. things.

i dont use stainless for my blades any way, so no loss there.

Cut it into 12 4 X 7" pieces....forge a slight dish in each one, and use them
to catch flux in the forge...

thanks for all the advice,

i wondered what it was good for, cause i was gonna sell or trade it, but it seems there is no real valuable use for it. maybe ill hold onto it......................

Yep bout all it's good for on knives is gaurds and bolsters.

I like 416 better for guard because it seems to machine and polish better, but I have used 304 and it sure beats the hell out of nickel silver:thumbup:

thats all i use is iron, and nickle silver for guards, ect. maybe i'll give some of this a try on a few pieces im doing now.

the thing is i hand file all my fittings at the moment, and i dont know till i try it how easy it will be to work the s.s. as compared to the NS

You know how periodically someone will come up with some random POS chunk of steel and say "well what is this good for" and folks will say "well, you could make guards and butt caps out of it". You know, like a old manhole cover or a bumper they found in the woods...

Well, this isn't like that...

304 is very good, nonhardening, stainless steel. It is "18-8" if I'm not mistaken. That isn't junk. It is one of the most rust proof steels you will come across.

I agree. If I'm not mistaken, 304 is specified as 'food safe' use. The scraps I have came from a food processing facility.

Andy,
I use a lot of 304. I also do a lot of hand filing. I find it cuts pretty quick with files, and while I do use it a lot for guards and bolsters, I've also been practicing filework on it, making small jigs, etc. It's a good snag!

im pretty sure mine came straight from a steel mill where the roll it in huge coils, my dad worked there and brought some cut offs home a few years ago, and i recently dug them out, not a spec of rust on them!!
