• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Stainless Steel Folders

I've never been a fan of stainless blade steels. Always used carbon in carry knives and in the kitchen and in the shop as a maker. Tony Bose made me a pocket knife in 440V and I absolutely love it! But I'd rather 'use' the two he made me in W2.

I can get a good carbon blade sharper than any stainless I've used. That said, Sanvik 12C27 was very close in sharpness & is likely the stainless alloy I'd pick.

Use or buy what ya like... Life's too short to do otherwise.

I wasn't gona say anything about one being sharper than the other cause don't care to get in argument but being Don opened door I have never seen a stainless knife that had that just grab and cut ya if ya weren't careful when ya went to feel how sharp it was have seen quiet a few carbon knives that were .
Also agree buy and use what ya like.
It's all good if ya like it.

I've seen carbon steel blades dull as a block of wood and stainless blades sharp as a scalpel....and vice versa.

K720 is O2 carbon steel...it takes and holds a great edge...
sandwik 14c28n is a pretty darn good stainless, developed to take a superfine edge among stainless and straightforward in terms of heat treatments.

Thanks Gary...

Need to add, just because I don't like stainless doesn't mean anything is wrong with it. Probably just something wrong with me and stuff... :D

Nothing wrong with you, Don. If there is, I've got it, too. :D I was going to say maybe it is an Ozarks thing, but you grew up using carbon steel on the Gulf Coast for years. Must be something else.

The great thing about customs, you can have makers that mainly use stainless throw in some carbon steel on occasion. I had Raphael Durand bring me one of his first W2 folders to Blade last year. Haven't used it yet, but of the two W2 folders I have from Tony, I carry and use the slim trapper a lot. One of my favorite carry knives.

Then there is that big Hanson green micarta folder that thinks it is a hunting knife most of the time.

Of the custom folders I use, 95% are carbon steel. Happy with the results. And, I know I can get and keep them sharp in the field.
