was thinking on making a chefs knife out of 440c. I have not worked with stainless before? Anyone know how to heat treat this stuff?

It's easy! Just email this guy: darrinsanders8666@gmail.com
Darrin does an excellent job for a very fair price.
You can't heat treat stainless effectively without some relatively expensive equipment.

If you have a HT oven and HT foil, and quecnch plates...it is very easy.....otherwise, you will have to send it out.

What they're saying is that some steels, such as 440c, have very particular requirements for successful heat treating.
You're not likely to get it right if you try to do it without good (that is, expensive) equipment.
You end up either sending it to a shop, or spending a bunch doing it yourself.
There is a third option, though- use Google and use any knife related organization and find out who in your area is set up to HT 440c. Most knifemakers are very friendly helpful folks.

You can make a great chef's knife out of other steels that can be heat treated with minimal equipment...would you consider that?

I always find it sort of funny how many new makers want to do their own HT. They feel it makes them more professional. In the actuality, most professionals send out the bulk of their HT.

Learning to HT properly is a very good thing to learn. Stainless steels, and many high allow steels do not HT properly without advanced level equipment.

I'm saving that for later ;)
