stainless vs. carbon damascus question

OK, I think I have a fair grasp of the process to make carbon steel damascus, i.e., find dissimilar materiels that weld well together and etch to highlight the differences. I also understand that stainless steel can be hot hard and welds differently than carbon steels.

But after seeing quite a bit of information on the interweb on forging pattern welded steel, i notice that it all refers to carbon steels. Can anybody tell what the big technological hurdles are that need to be overcome before a home shop can become the next "Devon Thomas" shop? (I mean generating stainless damascus billets for sale) Is it something like controlling the environment in a can for the welds, or working at higher temps, or what?

Any info would be great, please and thank you.

The question that popped into my mind is how do you get it to etch?:D
