I have not use stainless steel yet, all I have worked with is high carbon steels. With high carbon the common practice is to heat treat with a oil-based quench then temper, however I do know that stainless is a different animal all together. I would contact someone like Crucible Steels out of Dallas Tx. They will sell you the steel, then give you the right procedures on how to get the maximum performace out of the metal you buy. I have spent a few minutes on the phone with the people out of Dallas and their company makes steel for knife builders.

Before u go much further i would suggest reading a few books. Im not trying to be rude or anything it will just give u a much better understanding of what is going on. I also would not reccommend that u start with a stainless steel, but thats just me. I started on O1 tool steel and worked my way up to stainless steel after about a year of playing with high carbon steels. If u want to start on stainless do u have the appropriate means to do a controlled soak at 1900+ degrees? If not u will have to send out your knife blanks to be HT buy some1 else. The reason many start with crabon steels is that generally they are easier to work with and cheaper up front cost. U will mess up so why not mess up a cheaper piece of steel then a costly piece.

Hi, you'll still need to heat treat and temper the steel, although most of the stainless steels we use don't require an oil quench. You will need an oven to control the temp, a forge just isn't the way to go with stainless. The good news is, you can send them out and have them heat treated and tempered for not too much money and you know it's done right.

Welcome to Shoptalk, Vern.

What variety of stainless steel is this? It is easier to help you, knowing that. Thanks.

If stainless, try Paul Bos to heat treat......
I'd put anything he HT's against any other blade steel.....and probably win.....
No challenge issued....no need...noone would take on a steel that Paul HT'd.....
Have a Great Day.....and don't try to match Paul......on a very medicore day, Noone can do better............
I am honest, not biased.....
