Stamping makers mark….

On a quest to get rid of Decarb I was thinking about heat treating my knives a lot thicker and sand/grind the excess metal off, removing whatever Decarb I may have. My question tho, is….. I usually stamp at the 1600 degree normalizing cycle when the metal 1084/15n20 is the hottest. If I stamp it, then when I do the post heat treat sand/grind, it will be erased. Any ideas?

You could Laser engrave or etch your mark on the finished heat treated blade🤔

I stamp mine when it is dull orange. I then grind both sides of the knife to remove scale and decarb. No issues with makers mark going away. How deep is your mark?

As you can see with this rough knife before heat treat, the stamp is quite clear. Even after a vigorous surface grind, its inset enough.

Side note: yes I know the mark is slightly canted and deeper on one side. The guy I had hit it while I held the knife and stamp was slightly off when he struck it.

My makers mark is a lot finer, so it doesn’t go as deep as yours. I guess I could whack it harder and get it to go a little deeper. That way if I have to grind some, I won’t erase it.

Post quench and temper. Gotta dress the blade up some and put the cutting edge on it but you can most definitely see the clear impression. Can you post pics of your stamp? Maybe a vid of it being used so we can see the process?
