Stand offs vs backspacer

I was wondering why more prefer the back spacer? I see most install one after they receive their knives.

Nice reply. I've never beaten this horse. My first Emerson. Ran down the list of threads. Didn't see any titles like this. Thought I'd ask. Real constructive.

Thanks Officers. I wasn't sure if there was an issue with blade coming into contact with stand offs, but I do think its a cleaner look. Thank you for the reply as I'm not familiar with these knives yet. Just now realizing these can be really customized.

Some people like the backspacer because the space there is noticeable to some. Emersons for the most part have been constructed with a backspacer. It wasn't till last year that the knives became available with stand-offs or backspacers. Now only some are available with backspacers. If you look closely at the models, there are fewer handle screws on either side of the true backspacer equiped models. On those models, the handle screws enter from one side and pass through the backspacer to thread into the oppossite liner. Models with stand-offs to begin with have the same quantity of handle screws on either side (not including pivot assembly ofcourse). The stand-off models are easier to service being that all removed hardware/parts are from one side of the knife. The crossing screws on some of the backspacer models require removal of the pocketclip to access the"hidden" handle screw. Hope this information enlightens you on some of the details to you question but hopefully some others as well. Ray

I like the backspacers, and the standoffs aren't bad except that I find that one some models have too many. I do prefer them on my customized ones though, they only have two.

One advantage of the threaded standoff models is the ability to replace them (the standoff) in the event of thread damage. On a backspacer model the entire liner would need replacement in the event of thread failure.

Gooey I've seen some knives with 4 stand offs. Looks ridiculous. Officers that's a great point, especially if I'm taking it apart to clean it. Thanks for the input everyone.

Ah yes. BOTH WORK. What a relief. I thought my knife would spontaneously combust if neither did. Pennypincher, if my postings are to foolish for you to comment on please don't. I understand this is probably a topic that's been covered a million times, but I'm new to the Emerson line and I notice people changing parts out for others. This is a forum to ask questions. If I'm not allowed to do so please let me know.

Back-spacer for me. I tried the stand-offs. Not for me.
Ask any question, anytime.

Please don't think I was picking on you, because I was not. I was making a joke, about another debate Back Spacers verses Standoffs.

Both do work, and like I said my 2013 tear born CQC-7 has a Backspacers, and now I understand the New ones have Standoffs.

Now honestly I do not focus on trivial items like Backspacesr, or Standoffs. As I said both work, and I am not like the guy who tinkers with perfection.

My Emerson is BONE STOCK OUT OF THE BOX, if EKI made an inexpensive BRASS SKULL CLIP, and Inexpensive Brass PIVOT SCREW I might spring for the set to make my knife a little more interesting. But until than it will be BLACK & BORING.

BTW I think some of the people who have done Colored Standoffs on their knives, have done a cool looking thing. But like I said i found my Emerson perfect out of the box, so why mess with perfection.

Relax partner, we're all here to talk about Emersons. Does seem some have fairly rigid thoughts about standoffs vs backspacers. I for one don't - pro's and con's either way.

I suspect that that was a knife that came with a backspacer and was converted to standoffs.

My A-100 has the backspacer with 4 screw placements, and my Mini A-100 has standoffs with 2 screw placements. I sort of like the look and feel of the backspacer more (maybe because I haven't had any knives with a backspacer like that before), but as far as disassembly and assembly, the standoffs are much much easier.

I in no way shape or form intend any disrespect, but I came from another forum where people deliberately intended to sabotage postings. Just a reaction I guess but its very hard to tell sometimes thru written messages someone's intent. This is all great information I'm receiving here. What sparked my question was, I noticed Lycosa mention that with stand offs, the blade stared to wear a hole in the pocket. I wasn't sure if I should switch out for a back spacer.

One of the problems with the internet is I can write I am going to kick your A**. I am smiling, and laughing, and you take it serious because you can only read what I wrote.

You are not there with me face to face, seeing I am only a 4 foot, 6 inch midget who weights 85 pounds soaking wet. So I have to be joking.

I like both on different knives.

I prefer a backspacer on my CQC-7B, maybe because it's an old model that used it in the past and I'm used to it. I think the standoffs look terrible on a CQC-7B.

I love the standoffs on my mini A-100, they "fit" the knife and it looks clean.

It's all preference. If someone doesn't like either one, making a backspacer or sourcing standoffs to fit doesn't modify any other part of the knife, so I doubt it would have any effect on the warranty?
