Does anybody here own either of these? How do they find their performance? Any info appreciated.

Hey Hat-
I've got a G10 Rookie and I simply love it. It is rivaled only by my small Sebenza for daily carry. The ATS-55 is outstanding for edge retention and ease of sharpening; the fit and finish is typical Spydie perfection, and the blade and handle geometry are perfectly suited to everyday utility. It is one of my favorite knives, and I'm still shocked that it was discontinued.

Thanks for the quick reply ptpalha. I am thinking of trying to track one of the two down untill the military jr is released.

Let me know if you can't find a G10 Rookie. I've seen a couple for sale over the last couple days (rabid Matriarch/Civilian searching).

I have a G-10 Rookie. I just recommended it in another post. It is a fantastic daily go everywhere (airports, whitewater rafting, work, it's light enough to wear in shorts, barmitzva's...you get the picture)knife. My son got it for me and to be honest at first I didn't like it. So naturally I beat the heck out of it...used it to pry etc. It just would not die. I gained respect for the little feller. I think I didn't like it because it didn't have metal spacers and I'm from the old school of heavy knives. Now it's one of my main carries. Especially during summer. Anyhow, now that I hear it's being discontinued I should probably get me another one. It's not a big knife, but if it's the size range your looking for it's a great choice. The only other recommendation I would make is a mini AFCK...

Both of these knives have been discontinued, and they both rock! I cant decide which one I like better. The standard is a little stouter. Smokey Mountain Knifeworks had them on closeout $39.99 Rookies, $42.99 Standards. Here is the thread with the contact info:

They may still have some left. At that price I would get one of each.

I had Harpy before I got Standard and Rookie. I liked (still do) its handle so much that decided to get Standard too. I was given opportunity to get a rookie wery cheaply in same deal so I bought also it.

Rookie as a package is shorter although the edge is longer. It is also lighter. Rookie has less belly. Rookie is slightly better cutter as the blade is thinner (about 0,5mm). It also feels less bombproof. I think that rookie has bigger hole:

Based what I wrote above I should like Rookie more as cutting performance is the most important aspect when I choose a knife. But I like more of Standard than Rookie (both appearance and handle comfort). Plain edged Standard and Harpy is duo that is capable to manage all my daily tasks. They share the same nice handle

shootist16 is right. Try Smokey Mountain Knife Works before you do anything else. I got both knives at the closeout prices, and I'm pleased with both. Personally, I like the heft and thick blade of the Standard, but aesthetically, I like the Rookie the best. They're both great knives. If SMKW has any left at those prices, you can afford both for what you'd pay for one other places.

SMKW has both on sale. I first got the Standard & loved it- Then I had to have the Rookie too. Love 'em both. (Gonna leave lots of stuff for my family & friends to fight over when I die broke...)
Hard decision to make.

The Rookie is one of the finest 3" blade production knives period. I go between thinking this or the Calypso Jr is the best of Spyderco. The Rookie is a great knife.

I found was that the Standard blade is too thick. Some have tried to show me the advantage of a thick blade but I failed to comprehend.

Get a Rookie before they vanish from existing stocks.

FWIW, I left the Wegner at home this morning in favor of the Rookie- I've only had it for a week or two & wanted to give it a fair run. I doubt it will replace my Wegner as my "every day" knife, but so far it looks like it will have it's share of "pocket time". Having to choose between a couple of good knives that you already own is not a bad problem to have

I have both knives and I have got to say the Standard is my daily carry almost every day. I think it is because the Standard feels better and stronger in my hand and is better suited to my daily requirements. The Standard, although a bit heftier, looks more of a utility knife, compared to the Rookie which is VERY pointy and almost feels like a stilletto. If you want an inconspicuous small folder for self defence and utility then go Rookie, if puncturing is less of a priority go Standard, rock solid performance and very well received (i.e. ignored) in public. NB I'm British and live and work in England.

Final verdict; if you can afford it get both before its too late if its one only go Standard.

A narrow pointy blade is good for "paring knife" duty - on apples and oranges and such. I like a very acute point for biting into packing tape and plastic packaging.

As for what "looks like a weapon," that's a very subjective "eye of the beholder" matter. There are a bunch of purpose-built martial bladecraft knives out there on in the works, from Spyderco and others, that I would hardly "pointy."

I'm not going to disagree with James on this one, the Rookie is a useful knife and very sharp with a blade not unlike a kitchen paring knife. However in the UK pocket knives have to be less than 3" and any locking knife is counted as a fixed blade, ie, explanation needed for carrying it. This does not necessarily mean you are making a court appearance with either knife but I would personally rather explain away the larger looking (though shorter bladed)Standard than the Rookie with the false top edge. The Rookie is a great knife for "getting your point across". Just my opinion the choice is yours.

There was some talk in the Spyderco Forum a while back about Sal and company working on a slip-joint folder, perhaps for just such jurisdictions. It should be possible to design one with under three inches of blade, measured along the cutting edge, with a finger choil behind the edge, as in the Calypso or Dragonfly, or even more so in the Native, so if it folded by accident your index finger would be pinched and not sliced.

There might be a design problem in balancing a strong backspring for a good slipjoint action with ease of one-hand opening with the thumb.

Meanwhile ... Good reason? Explanation? I carry a knife (preferably one that is convenient to deploy and won't fold up on my fingers) because I'm a human, even if I don't have particular cutting chore in mind, just as I carry a pen because I'm a literate human whether or not I know I'll need to write something, and I wear a watch because I'm a modern human, whether or not I have an appointment to keep.

It's quite preposterous for anybody who is in full possession of his or her wits and civil rights to walk around without a knife of some sort, so it's for not having a knife that it makes sense to ask the reason!

I suppose if one needs to tell the approximate time, one could contrive a way to us a knife as a sun dial, or (maybe more likely) to construct one from scrap wood and such. Also, for lack of a pen, one could carve letters or code to the extent of a short memo in some handy medium, and that would make at least as much sense as what I have seen people doing - using a ball point pen as a crude cutting/poking tool, for lack of a knife!!!

I just got the Standard and the Rookie G-10 and like them both they are small but pack a good feel in the hand. Easy to operate still think a razor box cutter works best on boxes. Just my 2 cents worth. I don't like to use my knives on cutting carboard seems like a task for the box cutter.

One of my all-time favorite Spydercos is the G-10/Standard/Plain Edge. I like it even more than the Calypso. Tough Knife!!!!!
Of course, I also love the Toad, which adveresly effects my credibility
