Standard reply to newbies

Im in the "Dont like" faction on the standard reply.

Its not that its not good / comprehensive, or even called for.

Its that it makes for boring reading for me.

I get 0 chance at learning something new or cool or interesting or different to those simple questions, because there is a standard answer, treated as gospel truth.

I still come back and read regardless.... waiting for the experienced makers to chime in with little tricks and tips not clearly documented on the internet or accepted as forum truth. Its those little things that I really enjoy.

Probably not as many as you think.

(341 of those posts are in the "Hot Chicks With Red Hair" thread alone, not counting any other Whine and Cheese posts.. :)

I think I only started the Standard Reply fairly recently, less than a year ?

Haha, see I always learn something new from your posts! "Hot chicks" thread here I come!

Sparljo, if this reply is used in only for the basic questions (like the Count uses it from what I saw), I believe it won't rob us of those small priceless tips.
To the contrary maybe leave times for the "pros" to reply to questions a little more advanced where I think they'll share more of those tips.
Makes sense?

Me too.
If I'm paying attention, I learn something here everyday.

Things to think about.
I made my first knife 45 years ago, I got my first PC 5 years ago. The first time that some one refered me to the "stickys" I was so damm mad I nearly quit this forum. "what the ---- is a sticky"
I know what a Hardy tool, fuller, tool steel ect. is. I still don't know what an f-stop, safe mode, not quite sure of what a browser is.
I did learn last week what a header was, (the one on the top of the screen not the one I use to make forged rivets)
while newbie questions do get frustrating we are all here to learn and shaire.
I guess the lesions is in patients and tring to understand. There are many kinds of newbies.
Speaking of whitch, Can anyone help this old Balcksmith out?
This newbie cant seam to make the damm ispell program download.

That was the point I was trying to make. When a new guy asks a question it is assumed he was too lazy to read all the info in the stickies, when, actually he may not know what a stickie is, much less where to find it.

The good thing about The Count's standard answer is all someone has to do is click a link. He has put all the info right there. Ive also seen Stacy Apelt answer the same questions time and again, and every time he is courteous and provides really good information. These are just two out of many, many makers here who offer to help.

On the other side of that coin however, are the guys who just assume the person asking the question is either lazy or an idiot.

Knifemakers are the most giving breed Ive seen. %99.99 of them give all their "secrets" away just to see someone do well. Its that %.01 who can taint the pool.

I really dont want anyone to think Im trying to be negative. This is a great forum with great people who are more that willing to help.

I'll just say again that this is a great forum and I learn from it. I would have given up without the info I found here.
Thanks to all here.

well id say everyone has to start somewhere, be it in knife making or any other endeavor, im sure not everyone can figure out how to operate equipment, grow a crop or make a house without asking a few questions.
