"Star" Gazing: Drawing Conclusions

I think alot of people in our society are so out of touch with reality that they actually think they can use some of the skills on the show without practicing them or learning other methods to start a fire, trap, etc that may save them valuable time and energy. Its one thing to watch someone else do it it is quite another to do it yourself.

Very true but if even one life is saved due to some skill or information learned from watching a survival show it's a win.

Of all the survival type shows on now. I like survivorman the best. His show while still a "show" is not over the top like some are. Yes, exactly - that's why I like them leaving in the failures. One episode had Les trying to start a fire by a different method, he had no luck and said "I guess I should have practised that one at home". Then he switched back to using the fire bow that he has used on numerous occasions and obviously has had plenty of practise with.

If they just showed him getting everything right on the first try then it could give the viewers the impression that what he does is easy and anyone could wander out into the bush and survive by doing what they could remember seeing on the show. Les Stroud has shown on his program that surviving in the wild can actually be quite tough and many viewers can appreciate that if it is tough for this guy with experience then it could be much worse for them. Maybe some viewers will think twice about getting into potentially risky situations without any preparation.

Now, the Man vs. Wild episode with Bears extreme bamboo ladder failure in Ecuador was very entertaining and to this day, defines the show for me. Straight-up entertainment and instructions on what not to do to survive. Uber-funny.

With all the entertainment Bear provides he sometimes sneaks in some helpful survival tidbits.
