Sal,

My dealer keeps telling me that he cannot get a StarMate from any of a half-dozen distributors he uses. I've been hearing this for close to two months now.

Is production that back-logged, or is this guy pissing down my back and telling me its raining?

Steve

I don't know who your dealer is but he is probably telling you the truth.

Starmates are in short supply for some reason. I was able to get a few, but not too many and I don't even try to compete with the 'net discounters. That may be why I still have them.

You want a what?.....Oh, a Starmate. Sorry we haven't had any of those yet, or, we had a couple but haven't gotten any more.

This is pretty much the standard answer that I have received from numerous distributors.

And forget about trying to find a plain edge model, very few out there.

Time will tell.

I am currently carrying a plain edged StarMate that I bought from Dennis Wright for $135 and am VERY happy with it. His service, too.

Have to second that, FullerH; I didn't know they were so hard to find

-- I called Dennis Wright a couple weeks ago and said "You open this afternoon? Got any Starmates? Plain edge?" He answered yes, yes and yes, so I drove right over and picked one up

(It's nice living within 20 minutes drive of a good knife dealer.) Been carrying it every day since, and I'm still completely thrilled with it

(A few dollars more than the lower Internet prices, to be sure, but he has it in stock, he gets to stay in business, and I get to fondle everything in his display case, and get to inspect the knife I'm buying, and get the knife the day I want it -- immediate gratification is good

I always was impressed by the Military's construction, but the handle's just too d*mn big for my jeans pockets -- the Starmate's got the same overbuilt construction in a more manageable size.

Actually, we're building them as fast as we can. We are currently increasing production on this model, but he demand has been greater. There have been two positive articles printed in the knife mags and a few mentions in the overseas mags. They'll probably be hard to locate for another two months. My apologies.
sal

No need to apologize Sal, everyone who continues to search for one will eventually find one. As long as increasing/speeding up production won't affect quality, all is good.
The one I have is pristine in every sense, and definitely is worth a longer wait to aquire. Keep up the great work.

Ken

Ken - thanx. No, we won't affect the quality except perhaps to improve it as we can.

Sal,

Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear my man isn't playing games...

I just ordered one from Dennis; when my guy gets one, I'll have a spare. What the hell; I have a spare Military as well. From everything I've heard about this knife, I would have ended up getting another one anyway.

Steve

I must say -- Spyderco outdid themselves on the Starmate. I didn't think the Military could be beat but the Starmate is going to give it a run for it's money.

I have the combo that I bought at a retail store in Los Angeles and a plain-edge that I bought from Ironside in Colorado. I think I paid retail for both (~$140) but it was money well spent.

I don't know if Spydie is doing anything different about the sharpening, but both of these examples were the sharpest blade I've ever touched, custom or production. Fit and finish is first-rate.

I just received my Starmate, all I have to say is WOOOOW!!! This is one heck of a chunk of steel. This thing screams STRENGTH! Question, what does the 877 mean on the blade? Is this like a 1 of #. Or is it a model? I think the model # is C55 am I correct? Also what is the liner lock made of and how is it held in place, will it stay secure? I don't think Sal would make a knife that would fall apart but I don't get it. Thanks in advance.

The model number is C55. The other number is the serial number of the knife. Usually Spyderco serializes the first 1000 knives of a new model. Yours was the 877th one made.

Doug, retail on the Starmate is $157.00
