Sorry this took so long. Here are some close-ups of my modified Starmate, showing the clip-side cutout that gives better hole clearance and provides a finger-groove. You may notice the cutout on both sides is wider than the original to accomodate this.

OK, how much to do mine? That looks great! How much does it improve handle comfort?

Looks great, Drew. I did the same with one of my older G-10 C15's, and I found that it really helps to access the opening hole better, as well as give a better purchase for the index finger. I'm finally getting a Starmate this week, so I'll be able to see first-hand about the need for your mod.

What are you doing? Get your hands off my knife, sizzle chest!

Drew,
As usual, another bang up job. You really can't appreciate it until you compare it with an original. I have to say...I think it is better.

Now I know why I snatched up those 3 knives you had for sale and that BM mod.

Hey Corduroy!
I just finished doing this same modification to my Starmate(sans filework on the liner), and I gotta say, you hit this one outta the park buddy! I thought it felt good right outta the box, but this mod. takes the Starmate to a new level. A great thing made even better!

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

I did the same thing to my Military. This mod. makes it so much more comfy and reduces risk of the hand sliding forward. I wish i has thought of doing this when I had my Starmate. Oh stupid me!

Due to popular demand (

), I'm offering to make this modification on other Starmates. I do ask a little money, and it will affect your warranty. Email me and I'll send you details.

If you've already emailed me, you should get a message soon. Honest. I think I did it right this time

Drew, what is your E-mail address? Is this something that I could do myself? I like to try things. What tools did you use? If you don't want to say I understand. I'll just have you do it.

Drew,
Great work-If I hadn't seen your previous efforts, I would have had the guts to start dremeling on some of my old BMs. Maybe it's the G10 dust, but that dremeling does get addictive.
Thanks for the pics, Cappy

Jeffa,

My email is adg@student.umass.edu

The icons next to a posters name give member profile info (including homepages and such), and email address. Just FYI.

I feel that this is a pretty simple modification that you could do yourself, though you should understand that disassembling or altering the knife violates your warranty (though Spyderco is very flexible when it comes to making its customers happy). Also, G-10 contains glass fiber which can irritate the skin and damage the lungs and eyes. Plese make sure you have appropriate eye protection and filter equipment.

Apart from the safety equipment, you don't need much else. I used a Dremel tool with a sanding drum, some 400-grit and 600-grit paper, and a needle file. The drum removes the material and chamfers the cutout to match the scales. Then a little hand-sanding gives a finish that matches the original handle edges. The needle file is used for notching the liner-lock tab. I do disassemble the knife in order to get at the filed area and to make sure no grit is trapped in the mechanism.

I don't mind giving this info at all. Modifying knives is fun and a good "starting project" - I worked on Benchmade knives for about a year before I started grinding my own blades. Just understand your own abilities and the risks of messing up a good knife, and take things slowly. I am offering this small modification for folks who'd rather not attempt it themselves.

Drew, Thanks I didn't know about the little icon and I thought a dremmel would be correct but I wanted to be sure. I am going to make the attempt your knife looks awesome.

Drew, you obviously never have seen me with hand tools....let me put it this way; You wouldn't let me do my own modification if you have seen me use handtools. In fact, you would take my tool box away.

That is why I am sending you my StarMate.

Drew, well you were right it did come out pretty good for a first try. Not as good as yours but it looks pretty darn good, I even added more thumb notches almost to the type of the eye for better thumb purchase. Thanks.

Drew, really nice upgrade.I just recieved my
Starmate today and I think your modification
is just what it needs.I'll try it myself though.
Thanks for the pics.

I just received my Starmate that I sent off to Drew for his modifications. It turned out extremely well. I am very pleased with the work he did. I also asked him to add a few additional serrations on the blade's thumb ramp for additional purchase. The combination of the finger cutout and thumb serrations make this knife *almost* perfect for me. Thanks, Drew.
