I feel that this is a pretty simple modification that you could do yourself, though you should understand that disassembling or altering the knife violates your warranty (though Spyderco is very flexible when it comes to making its customers happy). Also, G-10 contains glass fiber which can irritate the skin and damage the lungs and eyes. Plese make sure you have appropriate eye protection and filter equipment.
Apart from the safety equipment, you don't need much else. I used a Dremel tool with a sanding drum, some 400-grit and 600-grit paper, and a needle file. The drum removes the material and chamfers the cutout to match the scales. Then a little hand-sanding gives a finish that matches the original handle edges. The needle file is used for notching the liner-lock tab. I do disassemble the knife in order to get at the filed area and to make sure no grit is trapped in the mechanism.
I don't mind giving this info at all. Modifying knives is fun and a good "starting project" - I worked on Benchmade knives for about a year before I started grinding my own blades. Just understand your own abilities and the risks of messing up a good knife, and take things slowly. I am offering this small modification for folks who'd rather not attempt it themselves.
