Can someone help me with the pros and cons between these two knives? The knives appear to be very similar but not very knowledgable in determining the differences other than type of steel.

ummmm.....i don't even know where to begin.

the starmate has not been made for quite a while, the umnuum is widely available.

the starmate is a linerlock with g10 scales, the crk is all ti with a framelock.

the crk uses a bushing system in the pivot, the starmate does not.

the crk uses a thumbstud/stop pin, the starmate uses the spyderhole.

the umnuum was designed by chris reeve, the starmate by bob terzuola.

crk is tip up carry, starmate is tip down carry.

apples and oranges. if you're looking for a user, get the Um.

Yeah...not even in the same ball park. Starmate was an awesome knife but very different than the Umnumzaan.

Agree with everything, though the Umnumzaan does not have a pivot bushing system.

Yeah, how are they ever similar? LOL

The Umnumzaan has completely different materials and is simply just a more exclusive knife in general, which is why an Umnumzaan probably will cost you four times as much as the Starmate. This said, the Starmate would probably serve you greatly if you find one.

I think I sense some serious passion for the Ummmm. I guess the reason I asked the original question was related to a couple other threads. One on the Spyderco.com forum where a member had lost his Starmate and was trying to locate a new.

Of course being a newbie I had to find out what a Starmate was. I then came across a mention of the Ummm pertaining to the new release of the Para 2 in another thread.

Of course comparing photos of two "similar" looking knives does not make serious comparison but I've now put these two knives on my radar as for future purchase. Or in the case of the Starmate, hunt as like you say it's been discontinued and may be hard to find.

My Dad bought this one new back about 1999 or 2000 and he later gave it to me started me collecting Spyderco.

If I had to pick one? Starmate. Simply because I love it.

However good luck finding one PE....

As mentioned they are also very different knives.

My Starmate is battered and scratch but It has been checked by Spyderco and sharpen by Gail...
Now it's my holy relic !

Not really. Both are designed by Rob Terzuola but
it has much in common with the C36 military !

4mm thick blade.
Same liner lock as the C36.
Almost same clip (straight)

It's a very strong folder.

Yeah, you're right, I compared them now. You can still discern his style of the blades though.

I had the chance to meet Bob Terzuola twice in Paris. Great gentleman. Wonderful knives !
He's incredebly gifted at linerlocks and pure designs.
(He was the private teacher of Sal about the linerlocks)
His Century Starfighter was the "father" of the Starmate.
The C55 was the opportunity for the ELU to use a Terzuola knife at a fraction of their price.
