I know the Spyderco Starmate was discontinued, but is it still available?
I think it was a good looking knife. How did it perform? I'd appreciate comments re: the pros and cons.

Thanks.

It was one of my favorite designs from Spyderco. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the 440V blade. Never liked that steel.

I love my starmate, and I found after years of use and resharpening that the edge brittleness I too experienced with the 440V doesn't seem as bad as it used to be.

I LOVE my StarMate and wish that I could get another. I have several CPM 440V knives and have never experienced any edge chipping.

No, the Starmate is history. I own one. It is the only tanto bladed knife I have ever owned. Watch Ebay. You may find one for sale there.

The starmate isn't a tanto..(I coulda sworn)

Take a look at a real Japanese tanto. You'll see what I mean. In the west we have messed up the tanto profile by putting hard angles on it that were never there on the originals. It is a tanto indeed and closer to the real thing than what manufacturers currently put on knives.

Tanto in my head registers as the Lum style
No, you're thinking Emerson, his Spec War started the chisel look. Bob's tanto's are very traditional. His hamagiri tip is commonly found on swords. Although, traditional Tantos can be found without it.

yep it is a japanese style tanto, i have an old tac knives were they review it and say just that.

i have had 3 starmates, swapped 2 and sold 1, really is a cool little knife, my only con is its tip down carry which i dont care for. might have to get another.........i dont think i'd pay a big premium for 1 though (ie $150 and up) i think i got the last 1 NGK had, a combo edge, about 2 yrs ago.
