Hey guys I was just curious if anyone could help me out on where to start Ive always been a knife enthusiast since i was young I know doing it as a career may seem far fetched to put it lightly but its a passion of myn and I dont know where to start i live 20 miles from chicago if anyone knows any knife smiths aswell thanks :D

Try and find someone nearby to apprentice with. I offer apprentices time in my shop in trade for time working for me. If you can find this scenario, do it. I've watched it make a big difference to the learning curve even with my sorry teaching and remedial skillset. I'm sure a better knifemaker and/or better teacher could really help a lot more!

The best way to make a million dollars by making knives is to start with 2 million. I had to say it but seriously Fiddleback is right, there is nothing like hands on instruction. This forum is also full of knowledge, the search box is your friend. Use it first and if that fails then ask a question. I'm sure the Count will come along and add his list of info. which will be very helpful and keep you busy for a while.

You might consider learning a metalworking trade. For example, welding or machinist. This would allow you to develop some of the skills needed for knife making while making you more employable. After a few years of making knives as a hobby and part time vocation, you will have collected most of the resources needed to make the decision about becoming a full time maker.

Try and see if you can do it or like it first.
