I spent my morning hand carving a copper menuki (handle charm) for a yet to be made tanto... it came out pretty cool but I needed to do some serious grinding! I busted out an 8' piece of .36" 5160 steel and got to work!

.36" thick 5160 Steel
8.5" Blade, 5" handle

Jimping - buffed, blasted, buffed, blasted... will be sanded, buffed and blasted more for the most comfortable traction possible.

This one has a ways to go but I thought you guys would enjoy the pics... it will be for sale too!

Ahhh man really???? I have to be good too. Finances have been tough lately, and I promised no new knives for 2 months. Can you drag out making this Dan? LOL Just kidding. Cant wait to see what this thing looks like in the end.

umm..oh...not me! :D

This one was a surprise even for me, I had other work to do but was inspired...

So you promised no NEW knives for two months? I'm thinking one chop and it's used, :D just sayin'! :D :D :D

Wowza. I envy your skill and your toolset LOL!

:D Thanks!

I used a chop saw to cut my stock then ground to shape, I'm still considering a bandsaw. :D The checkering file/guide is pretty rad I must admit!

Usually profiling is a quick thing but with .36" it is serious! Even with a 40 grit belt it took a while and left a pile of metal...

Those are big holes too, 1/2" on the large ones... the lanyard hole is 1/4" and looks small. I'm using .375" SS tube to secure the scales....

It's funny,at first I though, "oh no, it was simple" but about 20 tools and many processes were involved. It has been fun I'll say that.

Sweet chopper!! I know some one is going to love it!!!! I still have both of mine. The hardest decision is choosing which one to take with me!!!

Thanks BigCountry! This one will be a lot like the ones you have, I really like the design.

I am still using an angle grinder to cut out blanks. I can't WAIT for a better solution.

I'm hoping to get a HF/other bandsaw or a Swag stand and porta-band... either setup would be nice. ...Good for anyone on a budget. I have cut most of my steel with a carpenters saw and metal cutting blade! The KMG grinder eats metal like crazy but a saw is the way to go.

"Tooling up" is a phrase with no opposite. It is a continual, gradual, explosion of tools in an always too small of a shop.

Lookin good!

Oooooo big CHOPPY, looks sweet already :D

... I like how you placed the holes for lightening it up.. even if they don't get seen, I like the symmetry.. random holes sometimes are too close together and in my mind create weaker spots in some cases.. EXTREME PRYING cases, but meh..

Thanks! The strategically placed holes really help with balance and lend for a strong construction.
