That's excellent work be proud of it, I'm putting in my 2 cents worth for a shield. It's your signature and should not be left off.

Just got started on a pattern I’ve never done. It’s a half-whittler with a clip blade and my razorbeak blade. One knife will have Giraffe and the other will have atlas stag scales. Stainless steel liners, bolsters and ATS-34 blade steel or maybe 440C. I haven’t decided on adding a my arrowhead shield yet.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the work in progress.

Shields are always fun. One maker does arrowheads made from silver coins.

Can you tell us the origin story of the razor beak blade?

B brownshoe I spoke with my dad this morning and told him to reply with the story of how he came up with the blade.

I actually coined the name Razorbeak. I thought of the blade shape as a cross between a coping blade, sheepsfoot and a utility razor blade. When looking at the blade it reminded me of a bird of prey’s beak and the 45 degree angle of the tip was like a razor blade from a utility knife. Hence the name Razorbeak. I thought it was a catchy description of the blade.

I have a liner lock Barlow that I use as my EDC. The blade is awesome. Great for all around the house stuff, really fine detail work and breaking down cardboard boxes. The blade has some flex and holds a nice edge.

Well  if only 2 blades of a 3 blade whittler are actually used for whittlin' AND only one blade of a 1/2 whittler is used for the eponymous purpose, then in fact a 1/2 whittler is aptly named. ;)
(Hey guys, did I sound convincing? o_O) Grasping here  :D

Otherwise -good question eisman eisman

B brownshoe The razor beak has the characteristics of a coping , sheep's foot and a warncliffe blade. Maybe a hawkbill. I was thinking of a good design for a working utility blade. I think the perfect knife to accommodate the blade is the Barlow. The two just seem to fit. Especially with a liner lock. My son David came up with the name.

Thanks Ed. The blade is distinctive.

I vote shield, at least for anything except stag, depending on the maker it can sometime be a bit like a signature too which in Ed Kramp Ed Kramp 's case I would say it is. I would say things like Stag where there is often much variation to the scale a shield just simply doesn't work so Stag and similar material are the exception off hand.

All finished up. This being a prototype you always learn so much. Looking forward to perfecting the next half whittler soon. In the mean time I’ve got some orders to fill. I just got my website up. Please check it out and let me know what you think. I’ve been a part time maker and things have changed a lot. Going full-time has been great. Thank you all for the nice comments.

Turned out fantastic Ed. Is this a pattern you’ll be adding to your production lineup?

Knife was delivered to me for QA on Saturday. Love the design. Beautiful knife. Feels really good in the hand. I went over it with a fine toothed comb and I think it turned out awesome for a first ever half-whittler. The next ones will be 10x better. Thanks for the new EDC dad. Ed Kramp Ed Kramp

Would love the hear your comments. Even the nits. I’ve picked out the majority of the little flaws. My dad was aware of most of them and how to fix/correct them. It’s good to have an extra set of eyes on things.

The little Razorbeak has no scrubbing on either side. The Clip blade hits the liner ever so slightly maybe 0.001. He thinks it happened after penning the knife.

The intent of this build was to experiment and learn the intricacies and challenges of the half-whittler.
