Started Out With Small Blades But.....Can't Go Back to Smaller Blades

When I started buying knives a few years ago I bought a delica and a few medium size

other Spydies. For the last year or so all I've been buying big & bigger knives.

A knife has to have a Cutting Edge of at least 3 1/4++ for me to even consider buying it.

I know I'm missing out on some great knives....the Manix 2 and the Para 2 for example,

but I like big blades on my knives. Millies, big ZTs,ex-01,and many more.

Anybody else who only buys big knives and doesn't even consider medium and small knives :D

well I am starting to lean towards "big knives". But that to me is 3"! LA county only allows that unfortunately... When I permanently live in OC county, I think I will start leaning towards 3.5"+.

i did for a while but living in Santa Barbara people freak out about anything 3" and up so now i carry a bigun and a sheeple knife

Amen to knives which can bisect apples. My EDC's average 3 1/2- 4" blades but top out at 7".

I agree absolutely. I just can't see any reason to carry a small folder when it's possible to carry a big one. The extra weight and size usually makes no practical difference. Of course really big folders, like the CS Rajah for example ,may not be appropriate in some situations.
The CS AK-47 is the shortest blade folder I have at 3.5", but the blade is very wide and the handle is long ,so it's hardly a small knife.
My local knife store just got the Spyderco Navaja which has a blade just under 4", which I'm considering, although I wish it was a little bigger. It's too bad that so many knife companies are so cautious about bringing out big folders. Cold Steel of course is one company that's an exception to that rule. I've got their Rajah 1, 6" Ti-lite, large Espada, 6" Vaquero Grande, Spartan, 5" tanto Voyageur and I'm going to pick up their new G-10 XL Espada when it comes out later this year. Now there's a totally unapologetic BIG folder.

I get around this by putting any blade shorter than 3.5" in the "small knife" category.

That means I get to carry my S90V Para 2 as a complementary "small knife" along with the S90V Military.

I find that smaller folders can't have the same thickness or durability that a larger knife can have, otherwise it defeats the purpose. I can think of a couple exceptions, mainly the benchmade MPR and the ZT MUDD 0500, but their kind are rare. a larger knife can have a thicker handle and a wider blade without making it weird than a small knife. I EDC a blur with the assistance with the 0200, and i find that it cuts a lot better than the 0200, not to mention being smaller. however, the 0200 is always there and always will be there for me. if i can break it, i am using it wrong. i can not imagine that knife in a <3 inch folder.

I don't even carry folders. my EDC is a Glock 78 field knife and the rest are all out door hiking/camping woods knives. The smallest I would carry is my Eskabar, and that would only be to accompany my BK9
I just can't justify paying the money for a knife that has such limited uses. Or paying $200-500 for a Strider or Emmerson that I would hesitate to use in an emergency incase I damage the knife.

I have always preferred larger pocket knives. I pretty much only carry medium sized knives ( 3.5" to 4") I have one larger folder, 4 1/4" blade that I carry. I'm considering buying a couple of the new cold steel voyagers with 5 1/2" blades.
Lately I have picked up a few teeny-tiny knives, a Mini Grip, Mini AK47 and Mini Lawman. I carry them with the clip removed in my left front pocket.

I tried to get a few smaller knives before, convinced that I'd prefer the lower weight and bulk for EDC, and that the knife would be more sheeple friendly. But eventually I also found that larger knives can do a lot more, and now I don't care about what sheeple think or what the law says about blade length.

My primary EDC folders have blades no less than 3.5"......although, I do occasionally carry a SS Cricket SE for times when I may think my Military is a bit much for the task at hand. I just feel more comfortable carrying a bigger blade...

I've always had a thing for bigger blades. The only smaller blades I buy now are slipjoints. The smallest blade in my current edc lineup is around 3.5", while the largest is around 4.5". That does not include my slipjoints.:)

Another big folder guy here. I'm not interested in a knife unless it's 3.5" and above. If it were up to me, all folders should be about 4"' and over! :D

I started out with the smaller knives like many others. Mini Griptilian size was the largest I wanted to EDC , especially working in an office environment. Well things change and I now lean more towards the larger folders. The smallest I like to carry is a Large Sebenza and largest is a Dwaine Carrillo. Now the question is for me what do I do with the small custom folders I already have... keep them or sell them. I kind of hate selling of things especially if it is a custom.
