Started Out With Small Blades But.....Can't Go Back to Smaller Blades

I consider the para-2 and the manix in the full sized knife category, but most of these larger style knives have turned more into collector peices because I can't wear them to work, they are too bulky, but my Benchmade 940 has seen the most pocket time for the full length knives that I carry

I started out with the smaller knives like many others. Mini Griptilian size was the largest I wanted to EDC , especially working in an office environment. Well things change and I now lean more towards the larger folders. The smallest I like to carry is a Large Sebenza and largest is a Dwaine Carrillo. Now the question is for me what do I do with the small custom folders I already have... keep them or sell them. I kind of hate selling of things especially if it is a custom.

Sell them and buy LARGE customs!

I started with smaller knives, then went bigger with knives like the BM 710, Microtech LCC and SOCOM, and Severtech. I found myself not needing such a large knife, nor wanting to carry a brick in my pocket. Now the largest knife I carry with any regularity is a BM 940D2CF, or a Caly 3 ZDP/CF (smaller, but heavier than the 940). Well, I do EDC a Endura Wave SE a lot now, but that's not a knife I use or hope I ever have to (if you know what I mean). In AZ I can carry whatever knife I want. Size doesn't matter, fixed or folding, autos and balisongs. It took several years, but practicality won out over novelty, and now a modestly sized folder that's comfortable to use and carry suits me the best.

Big folder guy here, too. 3.5" and up.
Same here. This is the reason I choose Kershaw folders over Spyderco. Most Spyderco folders have blades that are less than 3in wich is too small for a good knife for me.3 1/2 in is as small as I will go.

I generally prefer 3.5-inch to 4-inch blade sizes.

I have also had a few of the previous (pre 2011) Cold Steel Voyagers with 5-inch blades too.

One of the problems with smaller knives is that the handles are too hard to hold onto and I don't have very big hands either.

I am glad to see some newer knives like the Spyderco Super Leaf are an exception to that though.

I like fixed blades that are about 4". I even have a few that are 2.5ish. I like to carry a small fixed blade, Bark River PSK and or IMP, TUSK, or even my Eskabar. I like the IMP because it's a full size handle even though the blade is short. I can carry it or my Custom TUSK, or the PSK in most public areas, excluding Federal buildings and the like.
Sure, a 3.5 to 4" blade can do more things, bicect an apple as a good example. But, I'd rather have a fixed blade, and now you're talking about 7" of knife, if you want a 3.5 to 4" blade.
I do prefer a medium sized knife generally, but the short fixed blade is what I usually carry, for my own comfort as well as it's concealment.

For my uses, I find that blades around 3" are ideal, because of that I never really warmed to larger folders in an EDC role. I live in the city and work in an office environment and this size meets my needs. Anything larger would offer much more use and would be excess baggage to tote around. As for what others think, nothing is really sheeple friendly for the NKP. Folks have looked askance at me for using an SAK. Last weekend I was at a kids cooking class at a local supermarket. The staff started to hand out crinkle cutters to the kids to do their food prep with. My son asked me if he could borrow my knife (I was carrying a Skyline that day) and I handed it over. When the staff member passed his table to hand out some vegetables, she looked at him and asked where he got the knife, he replied "my dad", she then looked at me, and I told her that they had given them out to all the kids at school. Her jaw dropped and all the other parents laughed.

The reason I'm not fond of smaller folders is the gimped handle size in most designs. It doesn't feel right. I don't mind a blade that's 3" cutting edge, though I generally learn towards something longer.

I HATE "gimpy" knive too! ;)

I remember thinking that the Endura had a good sized blade, still do actually when it comes to practical utility. However these days I prefer 4'' or better. I am trying to wait patiently for the new Cold Steel Voyagers. I may go 4'' Tanto for a change, to start things off. Man this release is taking forever.

I started down that path through this last winter and am still in that trend now. I have a few lighter knives for summer shorts and golfing, etc. but I am most interested in apt folders with 3.5 or longer blades, many with overall lengths 8.5" to 9.5" and between 4.5 and 6.5 ounces. I pocket but as long as I'm wearing jeans with a belt to hold my pants up (my everyday belt is a 1 1/4" gun belt by default) , I always carry a larger folder these days :)

I agree on the larger blades, started with a Buck 110 with 3.75' blade, then an Endura 3 and Pacific Salt both at 3.875", etc. through SOG Pentagon & Spec. Elite 2 both at 5".

smaller vic never satisfied my needs... even victorinox alpineer didn't do it. My preference goes to +/- 3.5" range.
I used to limit to 3.5 ~ 4 range, but lately, I do appreciate smaller ones down to 3" or a bit less.

I'm a man of many tastes so I like to carry both larger and smaller folders. It all depends on what I want to carry on any given day.

I'm in the 3 to 3.5" is good for me as well; but I belt carry. If it is in my pocket I tend to go shorter 2 to 2 1/2".
