Klattman,

The question was is wrestling useful in a fighting situation. The clear answer is YES. Wrestling IS a sport, but it's a combat sport that's more than valid on the "streets" so to speak. Anyone that thinks that the smart thing to do is fight someone is starting with a flawed premise. Fighting sucks and should be your very last option, but if I have to I'd rather now how to win than not. So it's a moot point to say you should run, of course you should, any sane person would...but it's a fairy tale world that doesn't exist where can always run, sometimes you can't. From my personal experience I've never HAD to fight, and that suits me just fine.

I have started a thread in practac, but I don't think we disagree all that much in reality. I just wanted to get us out of this thread...since the inital post was not about self-defense.

Hawkpatriot,

Not to sound too fatherly and condecending....but ( :D ) listen to Nathan. My biggest regret in High School was NOT taking it seriously enough. Injury is lurking around the corner, joint and neck injuries kept me from actually competing most of my junior and senior year, I wasn't anything special but I was good enough to be 'A' team. If there is one thing you SHOULD do is focus on your neck and back strength. My personal opinion is that the way to do that is with a wrestlers bridge, starting with using hands and moving to no hands. I do this now and it has helped my neck and back immensely. Unfortunately the "best" place I can point you to to learn the technique is this doofus name Matt Furey http://www.mattfurey.com/ . He is THE biggest snake oil salesman and self promoter ON THE PLANET. However, even he occasionally produces something useful! :D

Anyway, have fun....

Jared

There is literally no wrestler on our team who has not been injured, dehydration is the most common ailment. Be careful man, don kill yourself. :(

I do strengthen my neck (shrugs) not only to make it strong and safe but also because it looks intimidating ;) . I need to work on the lats, though. Thanks for the advice everybody, much apprecitaed.

Wrestiling will make or break you, we did buddy carries the other day and I was carrying a 260 lb. guy on my back across the football field twice. (I'm 6'3 and weigh 185), after that we did 15 stadium runs, four sprints around the football field, 90 jumping jacks, 90 up downs, 90 sit-ups, and several hours of wrestling, which is far more tiring than any other sport I've ever participated in. But it is the best!

Hey hawkpatriot, I might end up wrestling you some day, do you have any tournaments against Wakulla High School in Florida? I'll be wrestling JV 189.

I live up in Maryland, so I wont be competing in Florida anytime soon. (But i hopefully will cuz running 3 miles a day in this freezing weather is gonna kill me.) I weigh 167 (down from 180 a few weeks ago), and I'm 5'9. I would be wrestling 171 but I'm JV, and we dont have weight classes in JV. Anyway my coach wants me to wrestle 189 and 215 in this weekend's tournament, so I need to weigh in above 171. That means that I have to gain back some of the weight I just lost, but it's allright. I'm a beginning wrestler, I've got a lot to learn and need experience so this tournament will be good for me. I'm not the fastest at learning the moves and stuff, but I'm dedicated all the way to wrestling and I try my hardest and give my 110%, and when we've been doing hit-its for 10 minutes I just remember the saying "Pain is weakness leaving the body". The reason I'm doing wrestling is not just to learn this sport but also to get in shape the warrior way. Wrestling is the best sport and I love it.

BTW Snake how many years have you wrestled, or are you a beginner like me?

This is my first year wrestling, but I won two out of three my first tournament, with pins on both. But what was really sad was I got my ass kicked by a 152 pound JV wrestler (I think they didn't have enough room on varsity, so they sent him to JV), which was pretty embarrassing. But, we can't win everything :D

Wrestling rocks!

I lost my first match (in 27 seconds), but I got back up with a promise to myself to work my ass off and become the best I can. I lost to a guy who most likely couldnt make varsity but was good enough to, and he was taller and obviously more experienced. I have alot to learn and I need more experience, and I just need to give ALL my energy into taking the other guy to the mat. I'm gonna be gettin some more experience this weekend in a team tournament, and I am so pumped!

Finished the tournament, I wrestled 6 matches at 189 against obviously better guys, but this was a damn good learning experience, thats why I did it.
