Starter Belt Grinder

never heard of that from any of the experienced makers on here, so i would say no. Dipping the blade, a platen chiller, or a misting system seams to be the preferred methods.

kdogmcg did you just grab the 1x5 cermaic platen liner off usaknifemakers? Also I recently watched your youtube video of your gear when you started and it was really nice to see someone making knives with similar started gear! Really made me think "I can do this". So thanks for putting that out there! But yeah, everytime I true the platen on my 1x30 it doesn't stay that way for long and I end up doing a LOT of low grit hand sanding with a hard backer to get my bevels flat.

No I mean waxing the grit so it runs cooler.

I am no knife maker; I have ground a grand total of two blades. But I have had a Rockwell 1x42 grinder for a while, and I have used Formax F-26 grease on the belts. It's a very nice product. Seems to make things work better.

It does not seem to do much for coarse belts, however.

I got it at Supergrit.com, which is a neat website.

On the subject of small grinders, little Rockwells come up on Craigslist a lot, and no one appreciates them, so they sell cheap. I put a treadmill motor on mine. I would not want to do another blade on it, but it's a great tool.

I do believe I got it at usaknifemaker, when I ordered some other stuff. Also make sure the stock platen is square and tight. I had to bend mine a bit to make the angle a true 90°. I kind of forgot about that video I did. Like a shop tour for a very early shop on a budget. Where there's a will there's a way.

I just got the craftsman 2x42, older model with 3 wheels, not the newer 2 wheel model. Added a ceramic platen and so far it has been great. Had the 1x30 from HF, but this is much better. My only concern is the speed it runs at, but that will be me having to adjust.

2x42 is definitely the way to go. Better belts gets you used to using a 2in wide belt and more powerful than the 1x30. But it is FAST
