I have an 8" dewalt bench grinder ( it was free as I use it for work already) what I do not have access to is a belt sander, I usually use a hand held grinder for these thngs, can anyone recommend me a good belt sander for knife making that's around 200$, ( not an attachment)

the 1x30 harbor freight is like 40 bucks. Next level up is the 2x42 craftsman which can be had for $150 if you get it on sale.

I wanted to get norton sand belts but they don't seem tO make 2/42 any other recommendations on good sanding belts size 2/42?

The craftsman is great for starting out. I went HF to the craftsman and while I'm still not that good it helps to upgrade it a bit. Search here or look on the tube for $5...or $50 knife shop (can't remember name). there are some cheap upgrades that help a lot. None of which slow it down so go slow.

I see you did not go with the multitool attachment, any reason why? u seemed really excited about it at first so I'm just curious ;) But the 2x42 craftsman seems to be a very capable sander and tons of knifemakers started out with that. Oh yea, like Tankerwolf said check out youtube, there are a lot of vids on adjustments you can make to turn it into an even better grinder and are all pretty much aimed at knife making. haha oh,, you know that the multitool is also sold by itself and can attach to pretty much any bench grinder right? is that what kept ya from getting it, thinkin ya had to buy the jet bench grinder as well? Anyway that's a nice score, getting a free bench grinder, what's the HP on it... Sorry, I know you already bought the craftsman, still just chattin :D

I looked at the DeWalt bench grinders, but had to start off with a Ryobi due to funds. The Craftsman is a belt sander I might look at for the future. Threads like these that people post are great because I just started and always looking for future tools to add to my small workplace.

I been grinding away with the craftsman, the only problem I had with it sofar was the thicker 30 grit belts fit very snug and it wouldn't spin so I would have to play around with it for maybe 15 minutes before it started working properly, I'm guessing after I go through a few belts the housing will grind away and I won't have this problem anymore, however if I do il probably take it apart and grind it thinner , but all in all the craftsman is deffinatly good enough

You should try picking up a 1HP lower RPM motor with a strong base and mounting the grinding arm on it. I thought about doing it once but ended up just getting a 2x72 instead.

Now save your money for a 2 x 72" The best two wheel that I bought in 1999 and still works fine is a www.cootebeltgrinder.com
You can find a used motor of 1HP or larger and with a couple of step pulleys, door hinges and link belt you with have a adjustable big boy machine!
If you every decide to get one, Norman coote is a great guy and will walk you through the set up and I will gladly help as well!
