Starter Fixed Blade

And I'll throw out another neat "starter" fixed blade that is a blast for beating innocent wood with: the BlackJack Grunt.

30 bucks or so, good sized, thick slab of full flat decent metal (440C-ish, I believe) that is convexed (!). Good place to get your feet wet with convexed edges.

I have one. Fun knife.

I'll throw another vote for Mora and KaBar/Becker. Moras are great if you don't need something super heavy-duty and you want something in the 4 inch range. If you want something a bit bigger and tougher, the KaBar USMC or any of the Beckers will serve you very well for a lifetime. All of them are carbon steel though, so you will need to care for them properly.

If you decided to get a mora they do make stainless steel as well just FYI. But he is right, if you get carbon do a quick search on how to take care of carbon.

my two cents for all around starter fixed blades - clean, strong/good steel and simple. These are both D2 steel and will hold an edge like nobody's business.....will handle just about anything you can throw at them - decent price range too

Take a look at the Kershaw Diskin Hunter. It is a lot of U.S made knife for around $45.00. At the end of the day, it is your money, and do what makes you happy. Not knowing your budget, you probably won't go wrong with any of the suggestions here. I am not a fan of Gerber in the past 10 years or more, but they are changing their offerings, trying to get back market share.

Yep, a basic mora will serve you well, other than that a gerber is also a good choice, cheap and durable. Good luck! A fixed blade is quite the adventure!

My suggestion is either the Kabar Becker BK-16 or BK-17 for a good practical general purpose but modestly priced fixed blade.

Maybe if the OP came back and gave a bit more information we could give some other suggestions . Like how much he wants to spend , how long of a blade he'd like , if he has large or small hands for handle consideration .
