Starter Spyderco?

A coworker was asking me about Spyderco knives. I admittedly have very little experience with them but I told him they have been around for quite some time and everyone I know loves their blades. He's looking for a good starter blade and I wasn't sure what direction to send him in. I have personally been looking at the Manix2 but he wants to keep the price lower than that. Probably about $30-$50. He doesn't really have any specifics on what he wants. So what would be a good starter knife for him to introduce him to the quality of Spydero? (I'd like to know too)

Thanks

Tenacious or Persistence are exactly what you are looking for. ;)

If he wants to spend a slight bit more the Delica, or Endura would be my choice. They don't look as fancy, but the blade steel is an improvement of the Chinese steel of the Tenacious, and Persistence.

+1 to Delica or Endura (depending on his preferred size)

+1 on the Delica, you can get them for under $50 in the Exchange here on BF if you keep your eye out. Otherwise I find the Persistence to be the perfect size for EDC in the budget value line.

I just checked out the Tenacious. I like that one a lot. I may pick that one up along with the Manix2. I'll mention the above suggestions.

Thanks

Delica or Endura depending upon his hand size. If he's the kind of person that would try to use the blade as a screwdriver, the saber grind models would hold up better.

Honestly, I'm not sure of his intentions other than to just have a knife. He may have just asked me because he knows I'm into knives and just wanted to make small talk. His question got me interested though so I started looking myself. Just ordered an all black Tenacious.

His innocent question may just be the beginning of a very expensive journey for me....

Have a good look at the Centofante 3 as well. If it is mostly going to be a slicer, take a C3. If it is going to see more "robust" use take a Delica or a Native, can't go wrong with either.

If you are thinking Manix size, look at the Tenacious - similar size, ergos and the G10. But personally, with a $50 budget, I'd rather try and squeeze in a smaller knife with VG10 or S30 steel.

Yep.... Delica. The very first knive that got me into this crazy obsession was years ago and it was a Delica with the old-school integrated clip and AUS-8 steel.

Yeah...the delica is THE starter spyderco. You can save a few bucks going with the Chinese made ambitious/persistence/tenacious/resilience line but you're taking a hit in blade steel and overall fit and finish but if you/he wants to get a good feel for what spyderco is all about the delica is the place to start. Then pick up a Southard...seriously...just do it.

I would agree with what "mlehto" just suggested. But do keep in mind that the old adage your gramma always said is so true "Most Of The Time You Get What You Pay For".

Now you can't go wrong with the Delica or Endura. But I would try to rachet it up from there if they're willing to dig a little deeper into their wallet. I also think that any of the Native models are great for starters as well. The Native is one you just can't go wrong with. And if you can get one of the older serrated Natives to go with it would be great as well.

Anything from the H-1 Salt Series would also be a good way to get started as well. Particularly the Tasman if you would want to try a Hawkbill.

I'd say something in at least vg10 or s30v for a beginner to get hooked. The chinese steels aint bad, but for someone new to the game, the low wear resistance might not quite "wow" them. Delica, Endura, or the FRN S30V native are certainly great choices.

The Native was my first real nice pocket knife, I scoured bladeforums and the internet looking at the "best" steels and makers, people couldn't stop talking about Spyderco's amazing use of S30V, and I couldn't have made a better purchase IMO. Carried it for about a year before it finally became too dull to use (I couldn't sharpen), bought another Spyderco and a sharpmaker and taught myself how to sharpen... :P

Now I have a new favorite to carry. But the Native is my go to running knife. Disappears clipped IWB in my running shorts. And for having such a small, pocketable handle size, the choil in the blade makes it have a very secure grip.
