Starter Spyderco?

I will have to back up some of the suggestions:
Delica - If he wants something smallish but great EDC sized with a nice steel in just about any color.
Endura - If he prefers something a little larger with the same great EDC Steel and any color.
Native - If he likes the length of the Delica but wants a thicker knife where he can choke up on the blade and can take a decent amount of heavy use as well. And a little better steel than the Delica.

My other suggestion would be the Spyderco Dragonfly 2, if he wants something small, people friendly, a nice blade shape, low ride clip, and good EDC steel. Also if he goes up to about the price of the Delica or Endura(give or take a few dollars) he can get the British Racing Green with the ZDP-189 steel!

Thanks guys. It appears the Delica is THE Spyderco. I cheaped out and ordered a Tenacious myself but I really like the looks of it over the Delica. I let him know the Delica is a great choice and to check Spyderco's website for more info and other choices. I'm going to try the Tenacious for a while and then maybe step up to the Manix2. I have specific taste and it limits my choices sometimes. Too particular I guess.

I'm a bit late to reply but Tenacious would have been my suggestion.
Have the foliage green and blue g-10 version.
You can't go wrong with this as a starter...nice choice.

Best Delica prices I can find are just above the $50 limit the OP mentioned. So if the OP's friend is willing to go up a bit then fine, Delica. Otherwise Tenacious and/or Persistence is the best bet. Can be purchased for $30-ish. Good value and an excellent introduction to Spydercos for someone who has never had one.

Got my Delica (FFG in brown) on Amazon for $54... so give him four bucks and have him order the Delica. He'll pay you back ;)

(I started with the Endura and had thought the Delica was just too small. It now gets more pocket time than any Spyderco - it's just perfect.)

The tenacious started it for me as I couldn't see spending that much on a knife and i thought everyone was crazy at the time for the higher end prices. Since then I realize you get what you pay for with knives though. I still have yet to get a delica though due to a very very tight budget.

The Delica was what originally got me hooked on Spyderco. After that, I got an Endura 4 and have been a lost cause ever since.

Got my Tenacious. A solid knife. I like the action and the style. I was originally looking are the Manix 2 until I discovered the Tenacious. So let me ask you this. What about the Manix2 is worth twice the price of the Tenacious? They have a very similar design. The M2 has a different opening/lock and the blade appears to be made of better steel. But is the M2 that much better?

You pretty much nailed it. The manix2 uses better materials overall (better steel, higher quality g10), uses a more intricate and perhaps stronger locking mechanism, has tighter tolerances, better fit and finish, and most importantly (at least in terms of price), the manix2 is made in Golden Colorado, the tenacious is made in china. The tenacious is perhaps the best deal in the knife world, the manix2 is generally a nicer knife, but in terms of performance they're closer than many of us would like to believe.

The Tenacious is what got me started and it seems you are already on the slippery slope. I think the Tenacious is brilliant, and I just received my second today (blue G-10), but I also took delivery of a FFG VG-10 Delica 4 today and it is the bomb, so I'd also highly recommend that as your second Spyderco. ;)

Delica, Endura or Dragonfly even if it's a user to stay in budget. I bought a BNIB Dragonfly ZDP for $50 shipped on ebay and a light user Delica FFG ZDP for about the same on the exhange not long ago so there are deals to be found out there.

Noticing people saying the native is thicker than the Delica? Are they thinking of the native 5? Because the frn native is quite thin. And that's the only native which can simply be referred to as "native" IMO.
