Recommendation? Starter stones for a noob

A no frills coarse stone is the backbone of all hand sharpening,

Well said!

This is exactly what I've found from long-term personal experience. After more time, money, and trial and error than I wanted to spend experimenting with different coarse abrasives, I found there was nothing that removed metal as quickly as the Baryonyx Manticore. I like toothy edges so after that it's just a matter of some light finishing strokes with one or two higher grits. This process minimizes the use of messy and time-consuming lubricants and keeps abrasive wear down. I don't see how I can make freehand sharpening any more simple and quick than this.
