Starting a Busse collection - Recommendations?

I am in the process of starting to collect Busse knives. I think they are incredibly well made and a functional work of art. I have procured 4 so far but I am curious as to what other, more seasoned Busse collectors feel are the ultimate Busse knives to have in a collection.

Also, do you recommend buying the new Busses as they are issued or just looking for particular ones on the second hand market. What do you think of other Busse knives such as the Swamp Rat versions? Again, this is for collecting. These knives will remain unused / unsharpened with the exception of 1 or 2 that I may use as functional knives.

Finally, how important is having the original Busse cardboard sheath when buying a knife for a collection?

I appreciate any constructive input.

Let's start with a few questions... :)

What do ya have so far? ...And out of them or of pix you've seen of others,
what Busse knife models do you prefer?

If you see a current offering through Busse's official website (bussecombat.com) or the Busse Company Store that's operated by idahoskunk here on this forum who's an independent authorized dealer (bussecompanystore.com) and it's offered in a color or finish/handle combination that you like, I'd personally recommend buying it through them. Usually, with the exception of the occasional Exchange deal where someone is selling for under original cost, buying from those 2 sites will usually be the least expensive way to get what you want on current models. Past models, well, you will have to rely on the Exchange more to find them.

Check these sites out for info on past & present models:
bussecollector.com
hogcult.com
Bad Mojo (http://homepage.mac.com/zombiekiller/badmojo/index.html)

Swamp Rat knives are excellent as well. Also, take a peek at ScrapYard Knives (scrapyardknives.com), which are also part of the Busse knife group.

Oh man... If you don't have that cardboard sheath...;):D LOL! The main perpose of the cardboard sheath is to protect the blade... Wait... The main purpose of the cardboard sheath is really to protect your postal courier during transit! ;) It's not critical, but nice to have for storage, shipping sold knives to the next owner, etc.

Funny glance into the past... Busse used to cut up USPS Priority boxes to make shopping sheaths out of before switching to these better plain white ones a few years back. :)

Anyway, I'm sure that pthers will be along to offer more suggestions shortly!

Welcome to the Forum, and to Busse Combat Knives! :D:thumbup:

What really want for collection is older models, but good luck getting a hold on one. You might also try to put together a collection of similarly colored blades. Or you can collect custom shop ones.

But to be honest just get what ever you think is the coolest knife out there, the more you love the knife yourself the more it will add to your collection.

A lot of custom shop is unique so you might want to score couple.

Welcome to the obsession.

but I am curious as to what other, more seasoned Busse collectors feel are the ultimate Busse knives to have in a collection.

MOAB
Killa Zilla
Ruck Kensai or ak47, or both. If it was me I'd have garth cut down an ak47 to one handed.
---
nmfbm
cg ffbm
cg hogfsh
cg sjtac
BAD
---
NICK set, both thin and xxl
pbf set, the killer b, 6" and 8"
a complete basic set - CRINKLE COAT version, not the smooth. including 3,5,7, and 9
any field grade you can get your hand on

thats just for me, going from the stand point of their closeness to "perfection" of design being their biggest point of reverence. The moab, killa zilla, ak47 and ruck are all busses that users and collectors dreamed about and never really imagined would come into existence. I'm not really a fan of the ak47 because it doesn't function well as a sword or a machete wich is why I'd have garth customize it. anything customized in the custom shop is immediately more collectible because it has a feature no other one of it's model has.

The nmfbm is the biggest choper in the busse line that within the "normal human use" range. any bigger and you start getting into actual khukuri size which requires a different approach in use. The ffbm is something you need to hold to really understand. it's as close to a "sledge hammer knife" that busse has made. The hogfsh is truly perfect in every way. I would buy it, the basic 9 and the nmfbm over every other knife on this list. The sjtac is... it's amazing for it's size, the ultimate do all knife that doesn't get stuck in the "does everything poorly" category. The bad is the best slicer produced by busse in a production manner.

The NICK sets are awesome if you can afford to have them. they function well as kitchen knives, and were within the "high end kitchen cutlery" price range when they were first offered (287$ i think), but now in the 450-600$ range they are pretty high up there. The pbf's are among the tankiest knives ever produced by busse. They are so thick at the edge that they almost don't function as knives. The basic set is something every collector should at least handle for a while. They are so well designed and so simple, the basic 9 being one of the greatest knife designs I've seen in the time I've been buying, trading and using knives. Field grades are part of busse history and inherently worth having even if you don't like the design.

There are plenty of other rare knives out there, but this list represents the ones that stood out to me when I had them as being really stellar designs that were worth having both for looks, feel and balance, but also for their functionality.

Also, do you recommend buying the new Busses as they are issued or just looking for particular ones on the second hand market.

Buy them as busse offers them if you want the knife. It's the cheapest way you are likely to get them, you might come into the market during a lull where prices are at or slightly below retail, but even at the best of times it will only be 10-20$ below retail. Certain models command a high premium, such as the ak47 and the ruck kensai. Both were under 600$ at the initial offering, now they command 900$+ even in a depressed market.

What do you think of other Busse knives such as the Swamp Rat versions? Again, this is for collecting.

There are no other busse knives. Swamp rat and Scrap yard knives are companies that are unto themselves that have the benefit of being able to talk with, get advice from, and sometimes use the same equipment as, jerry busse. As far as collecting, none of them are as high end as busse, they don't command the same price and they don't really have the same active market. as far as users, both are so close to busse in strength that few would be able to really tell the difference in use. It depends on what your aesthetic is, and what you want out of the knife.

Swamp rat and Scrap yard, being budget companies, both appeal to users much more than collectors.

Finally, how important is having the original Busse cardboard sheath when buying a knife for a collection?

It doesn't make any difference. I think the ideal would be to have a nice heavy duty leather sheath or a cordura kydex that fits it. The leather is nice looking for collecting purposes, and the cordura kydex is both functional as a sheathing method and doesn't wear on the knives as much as a straight kydex sheath does.

Jaxx, thanks for the reply. so far I have a Soul One ( the one that got me started), an NMSFNO, a Hell Razor and a Military Overrun Fusion Battle Mistress. I also have a rodent waki from Swamp Rat.

Funny about the cardboard sheath in that the Soul One arrived with a cardboard sheath that was a cut up USPS Priority Mail box with "Soul One" written on it. I got a bit peeved at the seller because I wanted the white cardboard sheath with inspection sticker included but perhaps this is what he had as well.

What do you think about the Zilla? I like the bigger Busse combat knives and am leaning towards a Bushwacker but am not sure.

older schmolder :p. The straight handle line is overrated. If you want to go for older pieces, go for the pre-straight handle knives, or the very first renditions of them like the proto-shba.

Man I'm tired, and I need to check my grammar before I post.

Back to the topic. What do I know I'm just a newbie piglet, who only seen SH in pictures.

I prefer the LE models myself, I just love the old time satin look. But the DC blades are pretty cool also. It basically depends on what you like. There are plenty of models and designs of Busse's to satisfy most anyone's desire. But hey I'm also just getting started with my own collection. Have fun and Welcome.

You need to check out the Bad Mojo site and read about the Soul blades!!

The older Tatical Cardboards didn't have stickers. I got some that were just like yours.

I've got a modest collection. My aim is to have at least one Bussekin knife in every size category. That basically means a knife for every .5 inch. But if there's two in the same category that are both cool, I'll prolly get them both... ;)
So far I've got about nine. I'm not gonna get all the swords, but I do want at least one. I also want a MOAB but it's just too expensive for me to buy off the cuff. I'm not gonna get a KZ 'cause kukri's just don't do anything at all for me. But apart from the blades mentioned, I want everything from the smallest hack to the NMFBMLE and in between.

It's a long term work in progress. :D

Nb: And forget about the Sus Scrofa. It's hideous. :grumpy: :D

Jee Wiz, sounds like you are headed in the right direction!!!

Congrats and welcome!

Welcome and congrats on your budding collection!

The takeaway for you is that pics of your Soul are not to be shown, that was part of Jerry's original conditions of sale. Now you probably didn't know that, but as this is Jerry's house here, we respect the man's wishes.

Nuke on!

Welcome to our madness.

If I was starting a Busse collection today I'd pick a Combat Grade (CG) color you like and that appeals to the masses as well (black/black is always good but there are plenty of other color combo's that are great as well ) and buy 1 of every model offered from Busse in that color combo. That is the cheapest way to buy and you'd have a great collection in a couple of years. And if the past is any indication of future values you'd have a very good investment. The CG models seem to appreciate the most of all the models even though they are the most common they are also usually the most sought after.

It would be expensive to do this but just think you'd have every standard model offered from when you started collecting until you stopped and in the same color combo. Very Cool.

Good luck and what ever you decide have fun with it.

:D:D

If you havent already, definitely pick up a Bushwacker Battle Mistress direct from the Busse Combat while they are still available!!

You get to pick your colors, experience buying direct from the source and best of all... NO AFTERMARKET MARKUP!!!

If you are collecting, I'd say buy as many of the Bushwackers as you can afford - they are going to surely be a modern classic!

However, the absolute best advice I can give is to HAVE FUN and enjoy the wonderful group of fellas here as much as the blades :D

if you aren't going to use them then it really doesn't matter. Get whatever you like the looks of.

Big +1 here. If you're collecting, there are only two reasons to buy them - you like how they look, or you think they will become valuable.

If you're buying based on looks, keep watching the for sale forum and buy whatever you like.If you're buying for value, buy combat grade versions of new releases, or stuff that's selling for less than original retail on the B/S/T forums - those are the ones most likely to appreciate, as Eric said.

One point to consider is that the crappy economy has driven prices WAY WAY WAY down for second hand knives. If you are going to buy second hand, now is the time to do so. As the economy recovers, there will be fewer people who need to sell their knives right now and thus fewer great deals to be had.

This is great advice. I did something similar to this when I discovered Busse knives. You need to set restrictions on yourself, and limiting the color combo seems to be the most effective. Good luck and welcome.
