Starting a Case collection, looking for ideas

I have always enjoyed buying and using all kinds of knives. "Tactical" (if you consider Spyderco and Benchmade Tactical) as well as slippies and old style lockbacks.

However, I have never actually "collected" knives in the sense of finding certain styles, handles, etc.

I recently bought my first Case (a red bone Mini Copperhead) and am thinking about starting a collection of Case knives.

I'm not looking to build value or anything like that, just would like to have a nice collection to show.

Now, do you recommend I buy only certain handles, or only certain knife designs? Any input on helping me find these knives without spending a ton, yet still building a nice collection? I would like to some day collect enough to build a nice walnut and glass case to hang on a wall, etc.

Thanks!

I think peanuts are a very nice little knife to collect. They offer alot of handle variety in different materials, good cutting in a small pocketable package, disappear in a pocket till you need it, don't make sheeple scream, and are made by more than just Case. Maybe some of my fellow forumites will post some of those nice pics they did for a peanut thread a while back.

Then theres trappers, harness jacks, stockmen, ...

I did this over the last year. I've built up a nice collection, but it's a collection only its owner would love. No real theme, just what I like. I tried getting a few examples of individual patterns but soon found I got bored looking at the same style knife all the time. I tried collecting a few by handle material (strangely, the way Case lists them on their site), but realized I didn't really want some of the patterns available. Then a few CV knives I just had to have. Then lockbacks. It just sort of evolved. And you know, I like it that way.

I'm not really sure there's a wrong way to do it, especially if you're not trying to build up something for value. Just buy what appeals to you. Do research to find out what's really available: Eg, presently, if you want CV you'd better like red bone, amber bone, or yellow delrin handles, and not every pattern is available at that.

This vendor has consistently good prices, among others. I have no stake in this site, just a customer. eBay has some OK deals, nothing great.

Good luck and happy collecting!

Good ideas.

I think I will start by buying the opposite of what my original post says. Each time I buy another Case it will be of a design I don't have, and in a handle I don't have.

Once I have enough Case's to not be able to do that any more, I'll decide which design/handle I would like more of.

:)

Collect all the yellow handled Case with Chrome Vanadium blades is what I recommend first.

Well the man did say "collect the whole set" :)

My first thought when I saw your post was the same as Jackknife - PEANUTS! Great little knives that will surprise you with just how much they can do. And as noted, there are a lot of handle options.

Yellow handled CVs are a good place to go. I started to, but as Para stated, there were some patterns I didn't like, or I just didn't like the execution of it in the yellow handles. I like trappers a lot, but the sharp edged, slab sided look and feel of the yellow handled trapper just turned me off. I have a few other Case trappers that I love though.

I gave up and just started gathering in what appealed to me. Even that changed as I went along. After a while you will be able to look over your collection and select groupings for display that just sort of developed, maybe on a subconscious level. But above all, have fun!

Oh, and make sure you show pics of new acquisitions. ;)

I don't have a need for the yellow handled CV fishing knife. I like all the others with Barehead Trapper, Trapper Jr, Sodbuster Jr and Peanut as favorites.

I wish they would do a yellow handle Canoe , single back spring, with Spey and Sheepsfoot CV blades [hint hint]

Peanuts are addictive!

SM2 I have to agree wholeheartedly with you on both counts. A CV, yellow handled Canoe with single back spring would be such a sweet EDC! I would prefer the standard blade config... no wait! A wharncliffe main blade with a pen secondary!

That reminds me, I have to clean and wipe down my yaller peanut.

Sort of in the same spot myself! I have as many customs as I actually need! Now I'm starting down the Slip joint road and boy are there many options our there.

I bought Queen knives(D2 and 1095), Schatt Morgan (ATS-34),Case knives (ATS-34 and CV), Bulldog in carbon, Eye brand in carbon, and Moormaker in 1095. I like the Trappers, Whittlers, and Stockman. I've sort gone wild for a while and I'm having to slow myself down.

I would buy anything that you like and can get at a fair price... Later on in the game you can always trade or sell the ones you decide you don't like..
Having a variety will help you decide what you really like.... JMHO
ENJOY.. It is very addictive :D

There are definitely alot of opinions out there as to how/what to collect. Many folks pick a pattern or series to collect. I started collecting Case knives a little over a year ago. I really just looked for any deal I could find. As I started to accumulate a few knives I began to realize exactly what I liked and sold off what I didn't really care for. No real rhyme or reason to the way I collect, I just buy what I like and try to only keep what I would carry. Whatever you do enjoy yourself.

Lot of well-thought out advice here. Myself, I like the canoe pattern and saddlehorn. I think Hen&Rooster do a yellow handled canoe? Good knives too I hear.

Most of my case collection is CV knives with no particular pattern being most popular.

I also LOVE the small case knives like peanuts and tiny trappers.

My Case collection is odd I guess.

My favorite patterns are the tiny trapper and canoe but I buy whatever strikes my fancy.

I recently started collecting CASE folders and was faced with the same question. At first, I was going to collect just orange type, but after looking at all the different patterns and materials available, I decided to mix it up. So far, I have 12 CASES and 4 SCHRADES (made in USA). The first knife I bought was a Orange G10 Russlock. I like the Harvest Orange Small Texas Toothpick, but also like the Mako lockback. My latest addition is a 2nd cut Stag Baby Butterbean...small but a beauty. I guess you can't go wrong if you collect what appeals to you and pay a fair price.

Take Care,

George
