Starting a Grind with a 60-80 Grit belt ??

Hey Guys...

I've been using some 36 Grit Ceramic belts,, however I just threw on a 60 Grit belt and I'm thinking I like the 60 Grit alot better than the 36 grit..

It's a Really smooth belt,, nice and Quiet and cuts a nice smooth pass..

What do you guys use to start a grind ??

Those 36 Grit belts are Ok,, but not as smooth as the 60...

What Say you ??

what i say is that i love the 60 grit blaze belts. there also a little safer to use than the 36 grit belts
 
the 36 or a 50 is just to carve a furrow where you know you'll be taking alot of material off. Just a second with that belt then change to the 60 or 80. Anyway thats what I did last batch. YMMV :)
 
Eric i only grind with a disk but i do my hogging with 50 or 60 grit. I find they take off the metal lots fast and are not as grabby on the metal.
 
I'm coming around to this as well. Especially after bumping my finger off of a 36 grit at full speed....

It'll grow back.

It just about has, but that doesn't mean I want to do it again! :) I've bounced my fingers off of a 60 grit before and it eats flesh MUCH less quickly. Not to mention, that's one less grit of belt I have to keep around the shop...

I start out with a 50 grit or 80 3M grit belt and go up from there. Then I go to hand rub. Merry Christmas to all who read this. :thumbup:
 
I use 50 grit Blaze and then straight to 220 gator. Very little heat, fairly smooth, fast, and I think I got 6 or 7 knives out of the last 50 and I still use it to hog handle material.:eek:

I like 36 grits to just remove ectra steel that will burn up 60 grit belts. If its 1/8" stock I'll just use 60 grit but 5/32" or 3/16" its first with the 36 grit.
 
I use 60 or 80 to start, may take a little longer, but there are a whole lot less deep gouges to try to find the bottom of with finer grits, so I think I make up my time loss there.

When you start with a 60, there is more surface area of the abrasive contacting the knife blade so it almost removes about as much as a 36, but much smoother.
 
Use an old 60-grit belt to profile and start your grind. That's what truly kills belts fast.

Then a fresh 60 to grind bevels.

From there, I go to 120, 240 & 400.

4 belts to stock...much simpler.
 
old 60 for profile and to cut a 45 for the bevel
new 60-80 belt then got to the gator belts A300-A45

36 grit is for handles and some times i use a flex belt in 220 to clean up the plunge
i have a few different belts for wood and what not as it will clog a gator belt
 
I ordered some 40 grit Klingspor zirconias and I like them better than the 35 grit. Any of the large grit belt will give you the "sandstorm" effect, but the 40's and 50's don't gouge as much. I have run out of the 40's but bought some 50's this time. Unfortunatly I still have a LOT of 36's. Getting stray 36 grit scratches out of the nether regions of a hardwood handle can be a chore. You just keep finding them.

Amen to that, This is the primary reason I got rid of the 36rs, I use 60's as the coarsest belt.
