I'm just starting out and would like to learn to forge blades. I'm considering buying a forgemaster propane forge, getting some steel and start hammering and hope for the best. It dosen't look like I can attend any knife making classes soon due to my work schedule. (if anyone knows of forging instruction available in the Atlanta area please let me know) Just wondering if it's worthwhile to pursue this armed only with what I've read or if it's better to wait until I get hands on instruction. I was considering getting 1075/1080 or 1095 or maybe 01 since I read that is a "forgiving" steel. Also I notice admiral steel offers 8670m (and it's relatively cheap) does anyone know if that might be ok for a begginer?

Best advice I can give you (being a noob myself) is build your own forge. Use Indian George's froge buildind tutorial. It serves me very well. Have fun.

Read, read,read.
Then go learn from someone if at all possible. Your approach of "Hammering away and hoping for the best", is not a good plan !
There are lots of hammer-ins offered by the ABS, and a great school in Arkansas. There are Blacksmith societies all over. And there are thousands of makers scattered around the globe.

Since you didn't fill out your profile, we don't know anything about you to offer much more help. You could be my next door neighbor? His grandson? Or his Grandfather?

Welcome to the BF.
