Hi All,
new to this forum and would like some advice.
I am presently doing reinforcment training prior to starting SF training propper next Feb. I am looking for a general purpose knife to attach to my webbing.
I currently have a camillus airforce survival knife fron 1979, but the sheath has died and a SOG Seal 2000. I am interested in a Tops Screaming Eagle.
Any advice would be appreciated....

I would say the Chris Reeve Green Beret knife with the 5.5" blade. Good luck to you sir. And more importantly HAVE FUN!!!

When you get where you're going, you'll know what you need! :D

Until then, get a good multitool.

Something designed for the job. Good luck to you sir and welcome.

Detailed Description
Sable IV

The Sable has one of the most practical and versatile of all the blade shapes. The full thickness of material on the back edge makes it a strong knife and the high grind and belly the blade offer a perfect utility knife which can double for most skinning tasks.

Each knife is made from a solid billet of A2 tool steel. This method results in two distinct advantages-the strength/weight ratio is exceptional and there is no handle/blade join. This means that there is no area where the blade and handle could come apart. A2 Tool Steel offers excellent edge retention and good shock resistance Hardness at between 55 and 57 Rockwell C is not brittle but gives good edge retention along with ease of sharpening.

Specifications
Blade material A2 Tool Steel
Blade hardness 55-57 RC
Blade coating KG Gun-Kote
Blade length 5.50" (139 mm)
Blade thickness 0.197" (5.0 mm)
Overall length 10.50" (266 mm)

Weight 10.5 oz. (297 g)
Sheath 5.5" wraparound, leatherr
Handle material A2 tool steel
Butt cap material D65S aluminum

Or this one in a similar vein. The sheath might be better for fixing to webbing.

Shadow IV

The Shadow series was designed to incorporate the two basic criteria needed in knives destined for hard field usage - plenty of blade weight and good strong points. This spearpoint design has been used by professional soldiers all over the world who have found them to be extremely good weapons as well as rugged dependable tools. The Shadow III is a good everyday carry knife and the pancake sheath rides high and snug. The slim, symmetrical sheath supplied with the Shadow I and Shadow IV has a strap which snaps over the cross guard and that can be moved to allow left-to-right or right-to-left closure.

Have you considered any Busse knives?

and in particular the quality of the blades

Edited to add that the Forum's Greg Covington makes combat blades (as do others). This is his offering

Gentlemen,
I have been checking all your replys and advice on the various web sites.
I am on a very steep learning curve!
I would like to add I have a Spec-Ops Combat Master Sheath for my SOG 2000. I had a minor defect with a pop-stud. Spec-Ops were unreal in their support, new one sent out to Australia no questions asked, and IMHO, great gear....
And thankyou for your kind words of goodwill and support in my military aspirations!
Cheers

You have a SOG Seal 2000. Consider getting a smaller clone for smaller tasks --- the SOG Seal Pup, which has a 4.85" blade to complement the 7" Seal 2k.

I've got a pair and just ordered a custom combination leather sheath from Rowe's Leather to carry both simultaneously.

i would go for Kydex instead of leather. The CR knives are perfect and you should look into the Strider, Busse or Swamprat knives as well.

But buy a "jumpable" kydex sheath. It won't rot away when you have to stay in a swamp for two weeks, and should you ever fall down or bump against something the possibility of stabbing thru the sheath or loosing it is less with kydex then with leather.

Good luck

A small folder can come in handy at times, too. I suggest you buy a Spyderco Salt (which one is up to you, serrations are recommended), they will never rust, and they're sharp as hell.

I would get a busse natural outlaw or a Swamp rat Ratwieler. I would get a synthetic sheath since SF does a lot of water training. There is also Mission knives to consider if you want a knife that will never rust and you don't have to keep clean. Very tough knife. Do you want something that could double as a fighter? What is you price range? I would also recommend I high quality folder. Prolly something like a frame lock cuz those are easy to keep clean. I appreciate you serving our country!

Good knife, but last thing you want to do is show up to the training with anything that has SF on it. Instructors just love that.

Hey Horned Toad,
I know what you mean by, "but last thing you want to do is show up to the training with anything that has SF on it. Instructors just love that".
It's like going to a motor race meet wearing a "factory racing team" shirt around!!!

First of all congradulations sigh (I'm a has been)

Advice....Make sure you use it (hard) before you and the rest of your buds rely on it okay. Read threads from Cliff Stamp, he knows stuff and it's logical.

I've been there and you dont trust a blade till you've used it right?

Rick

P.S I went with a custom and a hand shake, I believed in my blade, I saw diff. hardening and trashed it...yup, it was trashes but it bounced back with a fine rock and some care. It's never been so prety after the salt water. I have leagons of people asking me of blades...I'm unworthy...when you think of it soldier...you are (Worthy that is).

Gods speed
