Starting Special Forces Training, what Knife?

0012, Best of luck based on your location I'm guessing you're going for the Aussie SAS yes? I think everyone has recommended you some good knives so far, but if you're on a budget some of them are a little expensive, plus unless you can find one used or through the company store Busses have a long lead time. If you want some tough, affordable knives I'd recommend a Gerber LMF II infantry, or as someone else already suggested a SOG seal pup, seal pup elite, or maybe a gov-tac. Ranger knives RD series are nice no frills knives too, and I like the ones carried at sagecreek outfitters with the blaze orange handles. I guess not so great if you want to be inconspicous, but easy to find if you drop it. Plus it has a great sheath pocket which easily fits a SAK and firesteel. Just my two cents, but I've never been in the military. Good luck

If you have some time to spare (and money), get a Busse Hell Razor. Tops' Steel Eagle is not a bad choice either, neither is Ontario rat-7

Hi again all,
to Ligarto, we have 2 SF streams here in Australia, SASR as you mentioned and Commandos, selection is similar up to a point. Cdo's are covert up till task then overt thru to extraction, SASR usually stay covert entire op..Both have a CT (counter terrorism) function also. I am attempting Cdo's.
Correct about expense and aquisition from Australia, everything is 30% more due to exchange rate and some items are difficult to source suppliers who will ship etc.
I can't find much on Busse, for instance, web has only 2 knives on his site and no shipping info. I have a nice spec-ops sheath that will accept a blade up to 6" so the SOG Gov-Tac is looking good. I can also use the SOG kydex sheath supplied for water work. I would like to stay under the $200 US mark.

Busse and Strider are my top recomendations. Unfortunately Busse only sells two knives per month and Strider's are pretty expensive. So I think you should check out Swamp Rat knives.

A cheap fixed blade that you won't mind throwing away when the instructors wisely won't allow you to carry anything fixed without proving yourself first, and a quality multitool.

Go ahead and dummy cord the multi tool to it' sheath, and keep the sheath somewhere unobtrusive. You'll use the multitool and won't want to lose it.
A good small folder should also literally pass muster.

Don't buy anything you wouldn't be happy carrying on a 30KM forced march. You will do a lot more walking/running/crawling/swimming than you will shelter building/knife fighting/man-trap construction.

Have Fun,
Jeff

0012, Congratulations. You don't want to forget the Ontario Rat models. Especially when it comes time to skin an animal for your supper. I've seen many U.S. Army SF canidates use similar models for skinning and scaling fish.

Good luck on selection Slider. Make sure you toughen up your feet (if you haven't been told that already). Remember suffering only turns to misery when you indulge in self pity..........

What about the Spyderco Temperance? - 4" fixed blade. Light, plenty strong enough, good sheath for multiple attachement options, doesn't scream 'Regiment Wannabe'. Did I say it was light?

Well, if you need to work on something that might go kaboom if you have a magnetic anything check out : http://www.missionknives.com/. They are 100 % titanium w/ 0% MU. Their big folder MF1 is a very nice knife. Their web site seems to be under construction right now, but they make tough stuff.
