For most of the time I've been on these forums & before,I've always been on the hunt for the ultimate folder.I got some great knives,by practicing this method(CRK's,Spydies,Kershaws,Case,Vic SAK's,Boker,Queen, etc, etc).
I bought FB's before & good ones too,but when it came time to leave the house for work,I would ALWAYS grab a quality folder(slip-joint,locking/all different sizes),slip it into my pocket, then go about my day.

LATELY,though I've been intrigued by these small FB's.They're so handy. You don't have to open or close them.Just one piece of steel.I guess I could blame this new change of mind on the RAT IZULA.:)When I first got it,I cord-wrapped it immediately(first wrap BTW & came out pretty good).I carried it everyday for about 10 days, then I switched up to a folder(purely out of need for variety).

Now I have a Tom Krein TK2 w/jigged bone handles on the way, which I plan on using for EDC.I have a Koster Monster Nessie on the way, should be here around May.Now the MN will NOT be for EDC.(even though I wish I could get away with it.:D).It's gonna be my primary chopper when I go on camping/hunting excursions.
I plan on getting a RC3 & an RC6 too within the next few months.The RC6 will be my all around camp knife(food prep,hunting,cleaning(larger) game,tent spikes,gathering kindling...etc.)
The RC3 is small enough to EDC for me where I am & not too threatening looking to NKP.Also,I think it would shine on the campsite too.

With that said,I'll always love my folders & I won't be parting with them anytime soon.I'm just developing a bigger appreciation for fixed blades & their capabilities.
They're ALL great tools.I'm glad I'm not limiting myself to the folding half anymore.

Thanks :)

All the nervousness about lockbars over engaged, under engaged, spine whacks, blade not centered, pivot too tight, too loose, vertical play, horizontal play, how to clean, what oil to use, all just becomes background chatter when the knife in your pocket doesn't fold.

i have a Leatherman and a SAK.

they satisfy all my folding knife needs and desires.

everything else is a fixedblade (at the moment......)

I prefer folding knives. I live in the urban area and folding knives are a lot more comfortable and useful for me.

I like fixed blades too, though I have to satisfy my "folding monster" first.

You won't go wrong with ESEE.
There are also plenty of other great knives to try. Check out Bark River. I recently got Bravo 1 and absolutely love it (especially after some simple mods). It is going to be my main outdoor EDC.
Don't forget to try Busse (recommend to check out a bigger one 5"+). If you're on a budget, see if BK9 or BK7 is for you.

P.S.: Folder is better :p

I used to be a folder nut (still love my Spydercos), but I've been buying lots of FBs lately. 3 Rats (4, Izula, 6), and 3 Beckers (11, 2 and 7). Theres a few folders out now that I'd like to get my hands on, but there's a lot of new Beckers and a few new Rats coming too :)

Has it always been that way for you,or was there a time when you preferred a folder over fixed?

I started out with folders, since I always thought they were easier to carry and smaller. Like you, I discovered a myriad of smaller fixed blades and the simple elegance is attractive - no need for fancy locks and different ways to open and close. And much easier to clean for me.

The knife in my avatar right now is just 5" overall! :p

I lean towards waved folders. In CA, I can't conceal a fixed blade. Since I'm home 90% of the day, I have gotten back to FBs. Still waiting on a Ti tanto from Reese. It will have a heat colored hamon with Japanese stingray handle wrap and a non-magnetic kydex.

I have always preferred fixed blades over folders. In fact, I can't think of a single task where I wouldn't prefer a fixed blade. Since I can carry and conceal any blade I want here in Indiana (as long as it's not a switchblade or shuriken), I carry only fixed blades.

I've been getting more interested in small, fixed blades as an EDC option, too. In addition to the RAT Izula you already have, you might look at the Ka-Bar Becker Necker and BRKT Bravo Necker. They are all very popular choices in this catagory. In fact, BRKT makes a number of small, fixed blades that you might want to look into.

Another thing you might be interested in is the option of pocket sheaths. Sharpshooter Sheath Systems makes a nice little leather pocket sheath. I believe it was originally designed for the BRKT PSK, but it works just fine with a number of similarly sized knives.

Another "pocket system" is the A.G. Russell Woodswalker knive, which comes with a nice pocket sheath.

mdauben,I used to have a BR mini canadian.I sold it....can't remember why.

I really liked that knife, been thinking about getting one of their newer ones in 3V.

Those pocket sheaths are really cool.I have a couple of them from KSF.

Just a suggestion>> if you ever run across any of the older Spyderco Temperance models either in SE or PE grab one and try it out. I've got 3 of them and I'm using all of them frequently. I truly think they are one of the very best "Hard Use Fixed Blades" that I've ever used.

The FB-05 Temperance model of Spyderco's is truly a design that can be used for many different cutting chores. And with a great flat grind VG-10 blade they are a user's dream. You can still find them if you just look around.

The new Temperance 2 is also a super blade. A bit pricey but worth it.

A lock will never be as reliable as a solid hunk of steel. :D :D

I've always been a fixed-blade guy. I carried junk folders and spent my money on nice fixed blades. Now I just carry nice fixed blades.

Admittedly, there are a couple of folders I want just to own examples of quality (like a sebbie), but I'll always be a fixed blade guy.

I feel ya, JTR.

I love to use my Izula but find it impractical for EDC. The legal ramifications in NY are enough to deter me. Plus, I don't have a lot of activities that necessarily require the strength of a fixed blade. Seriously, I haven't even gone camping. Not once.

I'm going to start to experiment EDC'ing my Izula. I'll carry it in my right front pocket, like the rest of my folders. I think re-sheathing the knife will be the biggest annoyance but the benefits will be hassle-free use.

i love all kinds of knives. had a horozontal belt sheath made for my m4 mule. also a horo for busse game warden. bark river probably has largest selection of smaller knives that carry well under a loose shirt . i love my lilttle canadian.

I am a big fan of the fixed blades or sheath knives as they are sometimes called....

And have been for years...

I probably have 5 fixed blades for every folder I own...

And, where are the images?

My most used fixed blade is my Spyderco Swick... third from the left...

And the first knife I made was a fixed blade...
