Sorry for this totally off topic rant, but I need to blow off some steam otherwise someone might get hurt.

Ok, I was supposed to go to a family reunion this weekend, in fact, I would have left already. I made arrangements to take off the weekend, (I'm working 7 days a week) and as time went by people have been pestering me not to go. I finally caved in as a result of several different logistical problems which arose. Well, that doesn't bother me too much, most of my mom's family is a bunch of rednecks, and I would have been in a car with 5 people for five hours, and none of the relatives that I wanted to see will be there, plus I can't really afford to miss the twenty hours I pickup on the weekends.

What's really getting on my nerves is the fact that one of the girls that I'm suppossed to be working with left 4 hours early today, if I had gone to the reunion noone would be working. This girl has called out 5 times this month, wenseday I had to stay 20 minutes late because she wanted to take a smoke break before I left, and she's taken all of next week off! I haven't had a day off in a month! Heck, on my birthday I had to work 4 hours late becuase she called out!

Just needed to vent, thanks,

Bob

Sounds like you need to write a polite complaint to her boss saying what she has been doing. Use your extra hours on the job as a contrasting point, don't say that she needs to be fired and you need her pay. (Although You probably have earned it.)

Bring it to their attention that she is not pulling her weight.

If this dosent work get Uncle to ship your next K (a big one) to your office and make sure you show it around and say
"I have a big collection of these at home."

I can gaurantee the next time you start to get frusterated with a situation they might just give you payed time off.

If you cant do either of these I imagine you can figure something out.

Bob:

I feel your pain, bro. I've had jobs where people would ask for favors ( i.e. swapping days off, working for them, you know the drill....)and when it came time for quid pro quo it was a no- go ( I gotta go lie down after that one!

)

But I came to the realization, that I needed to worry about me and my performance, and those who freeload will get their come-upins. I would like to report that I've seen this type of justice in this world --although it seemed like I never would.

It is somewhat amusing to watch people like your co-worker eventually paint themselves into a corner, and kill their jobs. I know it's not right to gloat when this happens, but I do allow a subtle smirk to cross my face.

Be strong and make yourself invaluable to your employer. There are too few folks out there like you, bob. You know the kind... those who do give a d*#% about doing the job right. Keep you chin up and keep swinging!

Hi Craig,
well I think that you've rated me a bit beyond my merits. I'm the classic slacker, but I atleast don't miss work, and whatever I'm told to do gets done, with or without me grumbling.

Years ago when I was a young motorcycle rider riding in Baja I met an old Mexican fellow who maintained a few miles of the Baja California trail for no pay. And, a fine job he did with only a wheelbarrow and some hand tools. It was the best stretch of road along the 1000 kilometer trail and a welcome relief it was to the sometimes non existent road.

He just did it and when I asked him why he said, "the reward is in the work itself, not the pay." The meeting and experience became the stuff for a short story I wrote and sold to some magazine that I can't remember -- but I recall the title: The Keeper of the Road.

If I had a copy, Bob, I'd send it to you.
