Starting to like Gerber again!!!

I only have two Gerbers. An LMF II that I'm pretty happy with and a Steadfast. The Steadfast was bought a few years ago. I think was old stock from a store that closed as I bought if from a little antique store on vacation for $40. I seem to recall reading that they made the Steadfast years ago then reintroduced it. If that's correct this one might be the older model. It's still NIB other than a little honing on my Sharpmaker which left it with a razors edge.

I have a gerber paraframe that I use and abuse in ways I wouldn't do to higher end knives. It's held up pretty well, and if it breaks from my abuse, i'm out $15.

The paraframe also makes a good cheap beach/saltwater knife, as it's made of 420, lightweight, and again, not a big deal if you lose it.

I actually just found my Gerber gator last week, from when I was first old enough to buy a knife. That was about 15 years ago. It was made in the US and I beat the crap out of that knife. It was dull but in great shape. I sharpened it up and its as sharp as just about any knife I have.

My question is are the new gerber gators close to as good as the older ones. Or are they they built the same?

I love both of my Gerbers

I like the USA made gerbers just fine.My best one is a Titanium handled Harsey Airframe, with a 154CM blade. Those Ti handles were cast in Sweethome Oregon,I believe. They made a very limited number of those,it's a cool knife.

Is there any way to tell what kind of steel one's LMF is made of? I have heard tell some are 12c27 and others are...something else.

I've had mine of 7 or 8 years I guess...maybe less. It has the sheath where the belt loop is screwed on to the rubberized kydex part if that helps.

I am told the package is where the steel composition is noted but that is long gone.

Just got my Yari II. I wish I had been able to get the drop point version instead of the Tanto, but it's still a pretty nice knife. They put a whole lot of effort into the sheath system, and you can attach it about a billion different ways using the MOLLE system (which would be great if I had any MOLLE gear at all :P). The blade even came sharp out of the box  which is something I haven't seen before with Gerber knives. I'm pretty happy with it for the 70$ I paid for it.

Can't wait to use it. :D
