starting to seriously hate the axis lock

What?
I use the crap out of the Benchmades I have, at least compared to the EASY task of cutting open soda cans.
Heck, an $8 Chinese garbage gas station knife can usually handle THAT.

No kidding. I mention soda cans because they are "easy" in my book, but if I were to use a Benchmade on one and have something happen to it, unlikely though that may be, Benchmade certainly won't make good on it. Reread that warranty, it's there to protect Benchmade from slight mishaps that break or bend or mess up their knives.

Heck, even flipping open their knives probably would void the warranty.

not asking for a warranty replacement, my fault for breaking it...

having said that, i had a legitimate reason for taking the knife apart, my father used it and dropped it into a glaze that my mother uses to coat her paper art work...it was coated completely and needed to be cleaned asap or the glaze would have hardened...it got in between the liners, around the blade, everywhere...

getting it back together was just too damn annoying...

and to whomever said its a pile of parts, its not to hard to buy a new set of scales...

this time, i just will buy the damn scale and make sure that i am in calm state before reattempting it.

Meh, as long as the knife comes to me in good condition, I don't need a warranty.
If I break it, it's my problem.
Unless it's a Strider where they charge you an extra $150 for the "idiot abuse" clause. In that case, they'd better do some warranty work, as they charged me the extra cash specifically for the aforementioned idiot abuse.

my experience with BM's warantee has been different. disassembly has never been a problem for me.

Me too. Had a Barrage that the assist gave out on. I took it apart
because it felt like the spring end just popped out of it's hole. I couldn't
fix it but got it back together, called BM the next day and they said to send
it in. Received it 2 weeks later, in great shape. :)

The most useful tool when you are reassembling a benchmade is a pair of tweezers, for sure. They make it a breeze.

I've put 806's and a 741 through much hard use and abuse in some cases. To the point of the Axis lock having extreme blade play against the lock. 5-10 days at BM and they returned 100%. On the contrary, I think their warranty and service is top notch. And Folderguy, have you actually tried their service after abusing one of their knives or are you just speculating on what you read? I know what their warranty card says, however their ACTUAL service goes above and beyond in most cases.

Agree. I have had no problems with warranty service on a couple of 710s which I've sent back and had previously fully disassembled. But, then again, I reassembled them correctly and didn't bugger any of the fasteners... ;)

My friend has abuses his 520. He uses it like a screw driver and hammer. He sends his knife back to BM twice a year and has them replace the blade. He usually gets it back in 8-10 days in great working order. This costs him $25 for a new blade (cause they charge if you break it) and $5 for return shipping.

Me personally have had nothing but good from BM service. I had sent back a 615 rukus that I had tried to repair and ended up stripping a screw and they fixed for free. I disassembled a 32 morpho and lost a screw and they sent me a new screw set(all the screws for the entire knife) Free. I have requested clips for some bent ones and they send them out free of charge.

Well, I am sorry your knife was glazed. Maybe next time you can count to 10 if your that frustrated. I like the axis lock, some of the best one hand opening and closing a folder can provide. You can also white-knuckle the knife with out worry of disengaging the lock either.

What abuse clause? Haven't heard of it. May I ask in what way you "abused" the knife?

No, I've never had to send anything in to them, although now that you've clarified how they actually deal with their customers, I'll consider it should the need arise.

Thanks for the info.

There are so many weird things happening in this thread:

a) A small amount of patience and a post in these forums would have helped put the knife together.

b) Broken scale....I got a good laugh out of that. For future reference, snapping the scale does not help.

c) A soda can? They have pop tops, no knife needed. I've seen Benchmades in the field cutting up plenty of sandy/gritty line, flatten LP's and inflatable boats, dropped on rocks and boat decks, pry open paint cans, scape paint and non-skid, the list goes on. All more difficult than opening a soda can. Sheeesh.

d) Benchmade's warranty seems pretty legit. Never used myself, but several people in my unit use Lifesharpen every so often. None have reported problems. One guy has received free screws, and another received a free pocket clip. Maybe they treat military better, who knows. Never have I heard of a warranty denied due to abuse though.

I understand your frustration, though in a different way. I dented my blade during reassembly, got angry and decided to see how well it would cut through a wrench. Took off so much metal the blade probably lost as much metal as a year's worth of sharpening. Getting angry and breaking things sucks.

On the other hand, I've disassembled and reassembled my Kulgera three times now. It's just a matter of being patient and finding the right method. I thought about posting a video of how I do it next time since I've got a great procedure to reassemble.

As far as Benchmade's warranty is concerned... I really disagree with the fact that disassembly voids the warranty. I mean, so their crappy little omega spring breaks because it's made of substandard material, and instead of being able to bend some guitar string into a new one, I have to wait a week or more and pay for shipping to get it sent in to them to fix it? I personally find that incredibly lame and won't buy another AXIS lock knife unless I plan on having to service it myself at some point.

Did Benchmade's QC on their omega spring come down or what? I've been noticing a lot of spring failures happen in the first few months on models that people have had for years with no breakage.

WHAT THE F...?! May be you need to stay away from knives :D

About BM warranty - I know of an instance when BM replaced
a knife after a guy sent them a picture of a broken one.
He was overseas and it would be to expensive to mail it
back to USA

I sent in my BM 527 for warranty work. I called them and explained to them that I broke the tip of my knife because I dropped it on a tile floor. I was fully expecting to have to pay the $25 fee to replace the blade. He basically said "we can replace it for you this time, just be more careful". He didn't even make me pay the normal $5 shipping fee. Let's remember guys: a warranty is a guarantee against defects, not misuse. A knife, especially a folder, isn't designed to be used as a prybar, a screwdriver, a can-opener, and breaking your knife while you are doing any of those things is probably not going to be considered a defect, but rather, misuse.
