Starved Rock SP - Memorial Day Weekend

A group (about 30 or so) from my local outdoor group went car camping this past weekend at Starved Rock State Park in IL. This is probably a destination I would pick for myself alone, but is was extremely fun with the group and great for the kiddies.

I took the two oldest ones along on this trip. Here are a few pics.

Haha! You must be talking about the knife in the last couple pics? That is one that I made him. The compass is actually mine. My daughter had my spare, so he stole my Suunto.

This weekend (holiday) was no exception. The visitor center was insane. However, I got out of there quickly, and all our hiking was done early in the day and toward the east end. So really, it was not that bad.

By the time we got off the trails though, people were fighting for parking spots. That is why I first said "not normally a place I would pick for myself" because I hate the crowds. But, it sure is an awesome place to see.

I`m going hiking right down the road from there tomorrow, Mathieson State Park. It`s never as crowded there.

That's awesome, looks like the kids had a great time! Love the waterfall.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was probably just a bit older than your boy there the first time I went there with my family. I'm a long way from Starved Rock these days (California), but those pictures really brought back a lot of fun times.

Just go in December or January. You'll practially have the place to yourself!

I spent a lot of time at Starved Rock over the years. First as a Boy Scout camping spot, then as a bicycling destination (my first "century" was a ride to Starved Rock), and later as a motocycle destination (some great curvey roads along the river through there!).

Dont forget Buffalo Range Shooting & Riding (off-road ATV AND MX) Park just the other side of the river.
Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols and ?? outdoor range with strip mine pits to shoot into along with traditional ranges.

wish i would have done something more on memorial day weekend than eat and drink. oh well. ill have to check out starved rock someday. looks really nice and is close by thanks for the pics
