Hi all!

I tried to find some camping forums for this but there are slim pickings..

Anyway I am looking for free camping on state lands in NY/NJ/PA area.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I think if you search national and state forest for the areas you want you will come up with some good info. Here in WV most are free or minimal fee for permit, and many are on some great trout rivers.

Very nice out there. Can't carry a firearm though.

The Batona trail runs 60 miles and has 2 designated walk in only camp areas, but a lot of people just "stealth" camp.

I live in the area so I don't have to camp !
The best source would be , I think, the state websites.

I know years ago I stayed in a state land campground in Jim Thorpe PA right arouund or just off of rte 209.

It was fairly cheap as I remember, but the did not allow alcoholic beverages

I think all along the AT you can camp for free. State campgrounds in NY are cheap though 11-13 dollars a night or something.

For New York, you can start here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/camping.html

There are all kinds of trail heads in the Adirondacks where you can park and take off up the mountain, especially around Keene Valley, Lake Placid, etc. Lots of canoeing and carries around Saranac Lake. Once you get into the woods, there's nothing to stop you from bushwhacking and stealth camping. The rangers won't bother you unless you're getting really stupid with fire or trash. Be mindful that bears now associate campers with food, and bear-proof containers are now required. We've got some pretty clever black bears up here that are no longer afraid of you. :D
