Statesman 110

Maybe I'm not politically correct but I have always loved the deep oily black Ebony used in premium pocket knives for over 100 years. I really dug into the history of Ebony and Buck when the December BOTM came out last year and at that time I decided to find some Exhibition grade (think black keys on high end pianos from the 50's) for a pair of 112 Customs with inlays of MOP or Ivory and possibly pure silver. I have always liked figured wood and some of Bucks 110/112 Ebony knifes from the 60's to the 80's are spectacular but seldom matched. I'll be looking for a really nice example of the new 112 Ebony to display..

No........it was mostly the cockroaches.........BIG ones that came in with every Ebony shipment. Strange, but true.

Also Buck was going over to a cheaper waterwash system that was hard on real wood and the laminate inlays seemed a better bet in the long run.

I carried the Ebony 110s for many years and never heard of a problem or had one myself. I suppose if they were abused they might have problems.......but not for those who took care of them.

Or they were just not able to purchase the wood any longer...

While there were cockroaches in the shipments (the 1st thing we used to do when the crates of strips arrived was tent and fumigate them.), We discontinued the use of it when importing of Ebony was stopped.

A little back ground on the wood. Years ago we used to use real Maccassar Ebony until there was a moratorium on us getting it, so we switched to the laminate we use now. This is kinda going back to our roots using ebony.

Like so often with Buck history........there is some conflicting info. I remember a post here from CJ Buck where he said there were TWO reasons: Cockroaches and the new waterwash system. He did not say anything about being unable to get ebony any more.

When we get info from the past--memories are sometimes different and we have no way of knowing which memories are correct.......or some people may be intentionally leaving out part of the story for whatever reason. I suspect that profitability was often the underlying motive on most decisions.

Thanks to an unusual new partnership, Buck is reimplementing ebony wood on six of its core models. The difficult-to-source material returns after more than 25 years of absence in Buck’s lineup. The comes about from a new collaborative effort between Buck Knives and Taylor Guitars.

When the 110 Folding Hunter debuted in the sixties, its handle covers were originally made from ebony wood. “Ebony” is the name we use for wood in the genus diospyros, hardwoods that are distinguished by their toughness, density (dense enough to sink in water), and resistance to warping. For knife makers, this makes it a great choice for anybody who wants the unmistakable look of wood but also added stability and usability. It may not be quite as impervious to wear and time as a material like G-10, but it’s far from fragile and exhibits a more distinct character.

Luthiers prize ebony in particular for fretboards, and Taylor Guitars began the Ebony Project in 2011 to establish a sustainable source of a material that had, by then, become increasingly difficult to procure. Due to the overharvesting of ebony wood in the 70s,80s, and 90s, supplies began to dwindle. As they dwindled, the risk of coming into illegally-procured and -sourced became very real, and in the United States Federal regulations were implemented to prevent manufacturers from overstepping their bounds. The guitar maker Gibson found itself slapped with a lawsuit in 2012 after the illegal acquisition of ebony and rosewood. Taylor runs an ebony sawmill in Cameroon, Africa, and established a replanting regimen for ebony that they claim is scalable over time.

Acknowledging these difficulties, Buck switched away from ebony covers in the 90s, moving to the resin-treated woods we’re used to on modern versions of the 110 and its kin. But by partnering with Taylor, Buck can bring this classic material back into their lineup. You can now find the 110 and 112, in automatic, finger grooved, or standard configurations, available in ebony again. The relatively new 101, fixed blade version of the famous 110, is also benefiting from the partnership and can be had with ebony as well. It appears that the ebony scales are a total replacement, with the Dymondwood models no longer showing up on Buck’s website at this time

Welcome back, Ebony!!!!

Too bad that Ivory will never be back.

Since Africa mostly devolved into anarchy........too many poachers with AK47s roaming and killing too many elephants.

Not to mention wether or not the recepient of the info remembered or heard correctly.

If you are a BCCI member, check the BCCI forum for a discount on the Altamont knives. That is why I purchased the knife.
I have trouble navigating the bcci site and I’ve never found the place where it shows my member number let alone find out about the discount. I’m wondering if I have things setup like I need them.

I'd send ya links via pm but it wont work until ya log in and then the link isnt helpful as it's back to starting page.

the discount thread is in the forum part. under general discussion. literally 6 posts down, right now. you'll see it. your member name is under the membership directory link, but no number. you'll have to email them to get it or find your membership email or card that had it.

if ya get lost use the members only link to get back to main page. hope that helps.

If you can log into the BCCI website you should have your member number. It is the first 4 digits of your username. Unless they changed the format or you changed it yourself your log in user name is [member #][initials][zipcode]. That is how mine was assigned years ago anyways. "2231ry63129" 2231 is my member number, ry are my initials, and 63129 is my zipcode. The password of course was assigned as a random 6 digit number. Was anyone else assigned that way?

You pick your own user name now. He can email John and find out what it is....

Well I know my username, password and I can logon, I saved it on my phone. I can view the member profile, my name and member status is shown , view member only store, topics and posts but I can’t send a message or buy on the store. I’ve checked all my email archive but not finding anything where I was sent the confirmation or a member number. I don’t know but it seems like I’m only partially setup or missing something for complete access.

A month or so ago I contacted them and confirmed my membership and they told me I would receive further information. Maybe it got stuck in spam and deleted. Anyway I’m having a hard time navigating the site to get any answers.

Contact John Foresman by email and he'll get you set up....I had to do the same thing to get my number....

The reasons for eliminating Ebony are not mutual exclusive.
Moratorium on being able to import it
Cracks etc.. (our drying process was not as sophisticated as Taylor uses. The parts these days are much better stabilized and cracks etc are not the norm.)
Loss of being able to use Tric/Perk and moving to a water wash system. (which couldn't be used on the laminate either. Water and wood =bad things)
Those cockroaches were huge.
etc...
