status on the bushcraft knife?

I sure hope it has a scandi grind and squared off back spine to spark a FireSteel.

Once we're sorted on the 52100 and production of the steel, we can begin making the bushcraft model.

There is still some question on the "scandi" grind.

I live 15 minutes away from Spyderco HQ. If you twist my arm I might be willing to test a prototype.:D

Hi Chris,

Thanx for chiming in. (Chris Claycomb designed the Bushcraft model).

The question regarding the Scandi grind will be based on your decision. Last time we spoke, there was still a question of scandi vs full flat.

The poll seems to favor Scandi, but it is a small representative sample.

I'd like to do both scandi and full flat, but one will have to go first.

I spoke with our grinder last month and he says he can grind a scandi on 52100.

No pressure, but it's your call.

The proto is in Germany at an outdoor show. Should be back this week.

I try not to get excited about any project until I've got them in inventory.

They always take longer to develop than I plan. Probably becuse we've got so many going. But we're tenacious and persistent.

Sal,
Thanks for the update, There are alot of fans of the scandi bushcraft knife design here on the blade forum wilderness & survival forum. I feel you will sell alot of scandi's if you make one. What type of handle are you thinking for this knife?

Thanks - Ron Medise

Hi Sal,

Thanks for the update and reply.:)

I still reckon the scandi grind is the one to go for on the classic bushcraft knife. Over here the scandi is very popular, as we have said before. Last year I met Mors Kochanski and he won't use anything else for working in the Canadian bush, so it isn't just the Brits and the Scandinavians that find that it works. There are some pretty positive threads around now about the Skookum Bush Tool that he inspired.

A production full tang scandi would really be something. There just aren't that many knives like that out there, not when compared to the number with flat grinds.

You have been showing the prototypes around, what feedback have you been getting from knife folk in different places?

All the best

Chris

I am very excited about this knife...and just for the record..scandi is the way to go..stick with what works and you will profit bigtime! Thanks, Gene

Scandi would be fine, but I would prefer a full flat grind myself. Are there going to be cutouts in the full tang so it doesn't feel handle heavy?

Frank

Hi Chris,

The proto is not a scandi, so we've not had much feedback that would indicate a preference for the scandi. Most like the knife for it's size and shape, even those that know nothing of Bushcraft.

I've carried the knife a few times out in the Rocky mountain "bush" and I think it does serve well even as "just" an outdoor fixed blade. Blade size and shape are excellent and the handle is very comfortable to use.

I think scandi might be the way to go for the "traditional Bushcraft model", but I'd still like to add a "modern" version with a full flat in a stainless.

I'll keep you posted.

Why waste time with a full flat stainless ? Scandi and 51200 will be a winning combo Sal !!!!
Any idea yet of what the damage to our piggy banks might be ?
