I got my Stayglow scale order from Swiss Bianco today (he's fast too). I ordered a pair of 111mm for my OH Trekker and a pair of 91mm for my new Hiker. I popped them on and got my Fieldmaster and Classic out for a Stayglow extravaganza. If I can't find these knives when dropped or in the dark, I better give up :)

You gotta make sure you don't lose those somewhere (typed while wearing sunglasses)...

Hehehe-- from a design standpoint, I think Stayglow is ugly-- just not as cool as the classic red or black scales. It does grow on you, and from a survival standpoint, I think it is a great idea. Dropping a black knife in forest floor duff makes it challenging to find.

You said you just clipped them on, what is it that holds the scales on??

They look great.

The rivets/pins that hold things together have a brass nipple on the end and the scales have matching pockets. New scales can be popped on. I compressed mine with a little rubber-jawed vise to make sure they were fully seated.

I removed the old scales by starting the prying at the tweezers/toothpick slot, which is thicker and right next to one of the nipples.

I've put on used scales and added a tiny dab of JB Weld epoxy to make sure. I've read of others using Super Glue, which seems simple enough. Some of the scales can be left behind on the nipple, so they might not fit as tight when re-installed and a little glue is a good idea.

That's cool! Anyone know where to get that material to make your own scales? I presume those were cut to fit by the factory, yes?

fod here on the forums makes glowy micarta, check him out too.

NICE! I like the OH Trekker...wish it was a plain edge tho...YMMV

In a perfect world I would like a plain edge too, but I got the Trekker/Classic SD package for just $22, which I just couldn't pass up.

The serration design on the Trekker doesn't bother me as much for some reason. It is purely a hiking knife for me, and won't get much hard use-- food prep is 99% of the use it will see. The rest is there for CYA.

I think the Trekker is a perfect day hiking knife, coupled with a Classic for backup and scissors. For "serious" backwoods travel I take a mora or a Fallkniven F1. I like the mora coupled with one of the 91mm knives for a good lightweight do-all cutter kit. The F1, a folding saw and a 91mm SAK is my SHTF combo.

They are Victorinox factory scales supplied by Swiss Bianco http://www.swissbianco.com/. The 91mm scales were $12 and the 111mm ones were $18. He said he has very few 111mm scales left. He offers Trekkers with Stayglow scales for about $60, IIRC.

He has knives like this in the pipeline:

Plain edge OH Trekker with splash-anodized scales, pocket clip and may come with toothpick/tweezers/pen/pin

Swiss Bianco is a knife designer/maker and he is involved in a lot of SAK customizing. If you collect Alox-scaled SAK's, he has the coolest ones around. He just emigrated to the US.

It looks like he is still putting he web site together. His newsletters have more real info: http://www.swissbianco.com/newsletter.shtml.

Good info. I think the placement of the teeth may help...rather than at the butt of the blade like everyone else does. After a second look, the placement isnt so bad...and for $22 for that and a classic SD...yeah...GO FOR IT

Wow, I didn't know they glowed that well! I'd love to pick up a OHT in stayglow, one of my friends has a regular OHT and loves it. I actually like the serration placement on the combo blade of the OHT, makes both edge types more useful on a blade that size.
