Steel alternative to 1084 for simple heat treat using backyard forge?

It's well documented that 1084 is a great steel for those of us who do our own HT in the ol' backyard forge (take past non-magnetic, oil quench and 2-3 oven tempers). But 1084 is currently unavailable most places and I wanted to find an alternative that would be pretty close to the ease of HT of 1084.

Suggestions? 5160? O1? I know 1095 can be a little picky.

buy it from Aldo at njsteelbaron.com Tell him I sent you (everyone else here will send you to him too)

Hi Page. That is who I usually get my 1084 from.. but its all gone, hence looking for next best.

It happens. I think it could be his most popular steel. Last time he ran out, people had success calling him. He had stock that wasn't listed on the site. Also, he's at BLADE this week (so says the site), so he could have committed all he had for that.

As for an alternative, 1080 maybe?? I don't know, just guessing.

Anything approaching eutectoid(from below) without too much alloying is good for simple heat treat. I would say 1060 to 1080... 5160 needs a bit of attention but it is still definately doable.

Aldo out of 1084 :eek: no way!!!!
I just got some from him a couple of weeks ago, he'll get more soon wont he?

AKS was listing 1084v not too long ago, but I would still call Aldo first. If he's out of 1084 then you can bet he's working on getting more

You can usually get 1080 from Kelly Cupples at a very reasonable price... and you get free shipping if you order more than $100 worth of steel. The best way to check on Kelly's stock is to email him. There's a link to his email on the High Temp Tools webpage.
