That is the exact word I used when I emailed Matt back after receiving his report.

There is more to this "Get an analysis done. Then you'll know exactly what you have." You still have to sort through the alloy composition list and try to sync it up with various charts and tables to divine what alloy you really have. Additionally, the various ranges of "components" for the various alloys makes it even more interesting. On top of that, many "components" (presumably of lesser significance) are not even on the charts.

It does look like the 5140 is the closest match up. Looks like 50HRC tempered at 400F. None of the steel charts I've come across list the HRC for steel prior to tempering. Seems that would be interesting info. I'm not sure I'll play around with the stuff at this point, as it just won't do what I want to do as far as the knife learning I'm into right now.

Childzplay: I live fairly close to Charminade. I'm up St Louis Drive. My farm, alas, is no more. It was in Kealakekua on Hawaii (the Big Island).
