I am certainly no stranger to buying known steel from good suppliers. I have tried them all it seems. It's awful tempting sometimes to try to bang a knife out of a good looking piece of mystery steel, but oftentimes I just leave it alone and go shopping for something thats not going to give me too much of a headache.

I have recently acquired an Evenheat kiln, and I want to try as many different steel types as I can with it. I have some steel that may be too good to not try out. Has some sentimental value as well.

Is there someplace where I can send a piece off to? Whats the cost?

Thanks for the help guys, the search function didn't really lead me to what I was looking for.

I'm not sure if they just do it for anybody or if there is a fee, but you might shoot an email to Brad at Peters Heat Treat. He might be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

Element Labs does it and has offices all over. They usually run about $50, and need about 1" square.

Hey Josh, if you don't find a reasonable source, perhaps one of the local colleges would help. I'm sure UK has an appropriate spectrometer, Morehead State might be easier to deal with or even Maysville Tech. I know for a fact that KY Electric Steel in Ashland has one at their lab. They don't do outside work but who knows maybe a little mini kaiken or kiridashi would open such a door. Shoot me an email if you decide to go that route and I'll get you some contact info or at least who to talk to about such. Congrats on the Evenheat. Hope you get good with that. Maybe you will become a source for local HT in the future.
