I guy that I knew while he was bartending here was back in town the other day. I knew that he had gone back home to work at the family business that makes steel anchors, but I didn't know exactly what this encompassed. As the conversation went on, it turns out that his family owns a foundry in Crane, TX. I was told that they have the equipment to analyze steel samples to determine the exact chemistry. I hinted that I might have some samples to have analyzed some time in the future. I also added that if he wanted to take in samples for analysis that I would post the information here on BFC. He agreed.
So here's the deal. For $35.00 USD you can get a sample of your mystery steel analyzed. You will pay all shipping costs. Shipping can be USPS, UPS or Fedex - as you wish. Please send to:
Seth Langford c/o
National Foundry
299 Foundry Road (or)
P.O. Box 1146
Crane, TX 79731
Please provide instructions on how you wish to receive your results. You can have them sent via snail mail or email. I asked what size the specimens should be. He indicated that they should be about 3-4 sq. inches or so. If you want your sample back, you will need to make arrangements for return shipping.
I hope this helps some of you guys with random steels hanging around the shop! Best of luck!
P.S. I was also told that they can create small batches of custom steel with precise chemistries. More on this later once we do some more research
