So, as some of you know I found an old case trapper in my house. well i did some research and I have a thread posted in Bernard Levine's forum. That being said, I really, really like this knife. I want to put it up to save some kind of value that it may have. I was looking into another case trapper and it is hard to find one in carbon steel like this one. Sooooo....I was searching the 'bay and found an ad for one that is chrome vanadium. The seller said that chrome vanadium is essentially carbon steel...and therein lies the question..albeit longwinded...

Is chrome vanadium essentially carbon steel??

Thanks again my WS&S brethren.

all, or at least most, of the modern case knives that are offered in carbon are actually chrome vandium, which is a carbon type steel as far as i know. it does the patina thing and all.

Thanks Brendan!

I still haven't quite figured out what to use the gunshow knife for but I will :D Did get a couple of  faces from my friends...hehe

the steel is good, so it might make a good modding candidate. i can definatly relate on the faces though.

2-11. CHROME-VANADIUM STEELS. The vanadium content of this steel is approximately 0.181percent and the chromium content approximately 1.00 percent. Chrome vanadium steels when heat-treated have excellent properties such as strength, toughness, and resistance to wear and fatigue. A special grade of this steel in sheet form can be cold- formed into intricate shapes. It can be folded and flattened without signs of breaking or failure. Chrome-vanadium steel with medium high carbon content (SAE 6150) is used to make springs. Chrome-vanadium steel with high carbon content (SAE 6195) is used for ball and roller bearings.

6150 is similar in performance to 5160.I'm not familiar with 6195 but it should make a good blade.
