I just acquired a Manix 2 with CTS BD1 blade steel. How does this steel stack up to some of the others?
Thanks

I'd like more info on it as well. Got the same knife. As per my own experience, it's OK but nothing amazing. Maybe a bit similar to AUS8, maybe VG10, but easier to sharpen.
I personally wouldn't place it in the category you see in this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...based-on-Edge-Retention-cutting-5-8-quot-rope . I was quite surprised by that test result, to be honest. For me, it definitely performs better than 420HC.
Doesn't rust at all though, as far as I've experienced.

It is Carpenter Steel's version of Gingami 1, more commonly known as Gin 1 steel. That is the steel that Spyderco built their reputation with. It is not "the best" anything, but it has decent wear resistance, decent toughness and good corrosion resistance. I wouldn't call it a "super" steel, but it makes a good working blade.

My blue Manix will always be in my carry rotation. I primarily collect and carry. My SAKs are my cutters. Being a Gulf coast resident, rust resistance is a huge plus and the Spydee Gin's are great in this regard. I have also heard that the CTS BD1 is very similar to Jap-Gin steel family. I have owned an endura in G-2 for over 20 yrs. Not a spot of rust, even when it sat in an ammo bag off and on for 10 yrs.
