Hi when you buy steel bar stock from steel companies like w1 w2 which type of finish is best for forging a blade hot rolled cold drawn decarb free ect any info would be great thanks.
Cold rolled steel has a nicer finish. If you're going to bugger it all up when you forge it, there is no reason to pay the higher costs for cold rolled, when hot rolled will work exactly the same. I use cold rolled sometimes for stock removal and I use the hot rolled for forged.
You have to be careful of cold rolled when working in the higher grade stainless steels should you ever want to use them. It is known for having odd patterns in it. It goes all the way through the steel.
